Spreader Patches

Hi All
I'm getting stretch marks on my sails where the the speaders hit the mainsail. I looked at the rules and find no mention of reinforcement being allowed. Can I put patches there? If the spreader poked a hole in the sail would I be allowed to patch the hole? Any comments please.

Thanks John
I knew there was a way to find them, but I guess I was brain dead this morning.

Rules interpretation

I while back(maybe quite a while) Graham bantock asked for an interpretation concerning the arrangement of boom vangs. The gist of the thing was whether the the adjustment could come from various parts of the boom/vang/gooseneck. Anyway I went looking for the interpretation and can't find it. Can an...

Hi Dave
This is not going to help much but I read somewhere that you shouldn't use microballoons to thicken glue joints. Don't know anymore than that. I use something called "Cabosil".

Re: Single Panel Molded Sails

Zvonko I wonder if I can ask a question? Do you shrink the mylar to fit the mold or do you stretch it to fit the mold? I tried shrinking it with poor(or worse) results. Now that you can make them commercially I won't be offended if you choose not to answer. Thanks Don Can224 Dear all Regarding compl...

Good luck Dave
I hate this step, it always takes me two or three days to work up the balls to glue the deck on.

Re: New Nylet Spirit is here! Progress at last!

Hi Dave
Do you have any diagonals from the bottom of the mast tube to the chain plate area? On two of my boats a crack formed in the deck right in front of the mast tube from the mast pushing down and the shrouds pulling up.

Re: fastening the front track to the deck

I managed to find some tiny brass flathead screws that had a 1/8" head and were about 3/8" long. They allowed me to drill and countersink a hole in the middle of the track that let the slide go right past like the screw wasn't there. The slide bridged the hole so there is no problem there. So far th...

Re: New Nylet Spirit is here! Progress at last!

Hi Dave It's looking good. I know it's too late now but a bit of advise. If you find you have a mysterious leak try moving your aft through deck fitting forward. The deck is quite often awash where it is now and water will find a way. My boat was set up just like yours and if the weather was up it w...

Hi Fred
I tried a Google translation instead of Babelfish and it is much better so you needn't translate. You wouldn't have the static numbers for any other IOM's would you?
Thanks

Re: CE and Sail Area

Thank you Fred It amazes me how tough it was to find this information. I would have thought it would be common knowledge. Maybe everyone was thinking," Figure it out yourself, I had to." I did roughly figure it out myself and my results are close to yours, so I'm happy. I went and looked at your web...

CE and Sail Area

Hi Can anyone tell me the area of the main and of the jib of an "A" rig and where(approx) the CE is? I have found 2 or 3 different formulae on the net and in books and each gives a different answer, none of which agrees with my gut feeling that this should be straight forward arithmetic that even I ...

Re: Another query

Sorry, I didn't mean to start something. This section of the rules says it all A.5.2 Except where used in headings, when a term is printed in “bold” the definition in the ERS applies and when a term is printed in “italics” the definition in the RRS applies. If I had looked a little deeper and if my ...

Re: Another query

Thanks Andy, I forgot the ERS again. Sometimes it seems like you have to read every rule just to see if it applies to your situation. It would be nice if there was some kind of search engine. I guess there is, it's called the "Rules" section of the IOMICA Forum.

I have to admitt that this is a little picky but, Section C says that it's rules are in effect while racing. Does this rule not limit the amount of backstay tension(based on boom stiffness) C.7.5 BOOMS DIMENSIONS minimum maximum Boom spar curvature measured between points on the top of the spar 10 m...

Rules question

Can someone explain the intent of this rule (2) The tack point shall not be set more than 25 mm forward of the forward end of the boom spar and the clew point shall not be set more than 25 mm aft of the aft end of the boom spar. How would you manage to attach a sail 25mm past the end of the boom? Is...

Roy I'm not trying to create problems. I used to sail US1M. I ran into a bunch of guys that sailed IOM's and they tried to convert me. I went home, downloaded the rules and started reading. After that it took them a year to get me to build an IOM. If the rules had been clearer I would have swapped r...

If the ink isn't "stiff" enough there is still the "no minimum size". How about a triangle of plastic 2mm per side? I think at least a minimum size is in order. Or make battens optional. To have a rule that is so open ended is just silly.

Since there is no minimum size for the battens and no material specified how about a 1/8" stroke with a Sharpie? It seems to meet the rules as far as I can see. I'm glad this came up.

Rules should not be written so that the "old Pros" can understand them, they should be written so the "new guys" can understand them. Once you have had all the rules explained four or five times you start to forget that they were initially very confusing. After a while you start to think that words ...

This is where simple rules fail. All my adjustments on my boom result in an almost continuous row of holes. If I was to make the holes 1/8" in diameter it would lighten the boom quite a bit and apparently be legal. I guess we would have to define the maximum size of an adjustment hole. As near as I ...
