Re: SHRS scoring system

I believe both systems have advantages and disadvantages. HMS gets very quickly to races between competitors at a similar level. This means that racing should be closer. It also allows for competitors to believe (however unrealistically) that they can go up a heat or two and sail with the top guys. ...

Re: 2016 EUROS

Places are awarded by country not Continent.

A sailor who is ranked 34th in Europe (not sure where that ranking comes from) may not be ranked high enough in his country at the time of qualification to be part of his national team.

Re: 2015 AGM - Topic: Ratify Emergency Class Rule

David does not seem happy with the requirement to have lines marked on the sails where the battens would be when the sail itself does not have battens. At first view this may seem strange. However I adopted a somewhat bureaucratic approach in an attempt to understand this rule - I read the class rul...

Re: Simple Heat Racing System

Federico, Thank you for your report. It was most interesting. One point - in order to rearrange the fleet after a race is completed would it not be easier to use finishing place in the heat (that is before any penalty or protest). This avoids having t wait for the result of any protest or redress he...

Re: 2015 AGM - Topic: Change to Class Championship Rules

First of all I would like to thank the class for voting this change. To reply to some of the opponents of this change (better late than never): 1. If an International Jury is appointed then the minimum requirement under Appendix N is 5 judges, including 3 International Judges and no more than two fr...

Re: Redress...

I have just re-read this whole thread. It would seem that much of the difficulty people are experiencing with this rule is due to a misunderstanding of the redress rules. Redress can be claimed when a boat considers that her score has been made significantly worse, through no fault of her own either...

Re: Simple Heat Racing System

Zoran, I would not argue with your statement: 'If you are 17th in overall after the qualifying races then you deserve to be in silver fleet - it is quite simple. With HMS there is also no way that someone who is 17th at the half of championship will win it on the end.' However there is a huge psycho...

Dick, You resolved your problem in yourposting You wrote: 'It seems that when redress is granted to a boat that is not damaged such that it cannot continue to race, but merely delayed by an entanglement for example, forcing the at fault boat to retire....' This is a case in which the RoW boat does n...

Re: Simple Heat Racing System

We use similar systems in team racing. One thing competitors hate is being seeded in to Gold Silver and Bronze fleets too early. I believe that with SHRS system we could avoid this by: - sailing one full day (or an agreed number say 3-5) of qualifying races - split the competitors into 5 ranked flee...

Re: Dubious racing tactics?

David, I would contest that the racing rules are unworkable. I would agree that many rules discussions are not based on the actual wording of the rules. Most questions regarding the rules can be answered by reciting the exact wording of the rule. Rule 18.3 is a classic example. Rule 18.3 switches of...

Re: Simple Heat Racing System

At a 5 or 6 day event I would be in favour of 3 seeding races. With no promotion there would be no hold ups for protests.

Re: Redress...

'As a result retiring' was removed from the rules for the Worlds. It did not lead to a flood of redress claims. The Jury examined carefully in each instance whether the right of way boat could have reasonably been able to avoid contact. A policy on redress was developed so that competitors would hav...

Re: Redress...

This is not a racing tactic, but the normal operation of redress. It is in the nature of the redress procedure that a competitor must make a judgement call on whether any redress can actually improve his score. In many cases we tend to give 'average points or the finishing position, whichever was be...

Re: Redress...

At the 2015 IOM Worlds the words 'as a result retiring' were removed from the rule. As a consequence a boat only had to convince the Jury that her score was made significantly worse through no fault of her own as a result of becoming disabled due to the actions of a boat breaking a rule of Part 2. W...
