Re: jib boom counterweight

What did you decide? The rules pertaining to the "rig" state that material of any density is allowed below the "lower point", to allow counter weights to be placed onto or inside the spar to make all rigs the same weight (C.7.3 (a)). The jib boom counterweight is not really a corrector weight (which...

Re: HULL MATERIALS....3D Printing. Croatian Motion.

It appears as though this discussion concerns how to allow "home builders" to use 3D technology for rapid prototyping. Since by all accounts, a 3D printed hull will be heavier for the same strength as a conventionally constructed hull, these will probably not be competitive but more as "trial horses...

Re: floatation

Bob Wells and I did an experiment using in-hull flotation bags. The text and underwater photos can be found on the IOMUSA.ORG website:

Re: spreader positioning

check with your sailmaker for directions regarding location and amount of pre-bend as well as suggested spreader position - there are no rules that specify spreader position

Re: Mast. Groovy or straight

I recall that my TS-2 seemed to work better with a groovy mast and Craig Smith sails. The rig stiffness/spreader position/groovy spar bending characteristics matched the hull's specs quite nicely. Mine did not go as well with a stiffer, non-groovy spar. I believe that there was a rig building guide ...

Re: Jib stay tension setup

there was a time when it was common for the shrouds to enter the mast and terminate (internally) on the part of the backstay fitting that pokes down into the masthead, with the idea that it might stiffen the mast above the hounds, but it doesn't really work so most have abandoned the practice.

Re: Jib stay tension setup

terminate the wire on the hook that attaches the jib to the mast

taking it to the mast head gives no advantage and plenty of disadvantages

Re: Jib stay tension setup

I use 0.15 wire from the top down to about 10 cm above the boom, then use string & a bowsie for adjustment. It minimized weight & windage aloft but more importantly, helps to keep the jib topping lift from hooking on the spreaders when slopping about because the wire is stiffer than string and tends...

Re: floatation

I guess that one could use some sort of a sealed bag that, if pressurized, could potentially stiffen the hull and give a miniscule performance advantage This is a good one to present to the general membership - having seen a brand new V9 go to the bottom recently, I believe the ability to add some p...

Re: Battery musings

I also like LiPo's due to their energy/weight ratio. Rather than fill the radio pot with a big battery high in the boat an alternative is to use smaller batteries in an attempt to lower the weight. Probably of minimal significance at most of our performance levels but if it makes you feel like you'r...

Hi Olivier

Thanks for responding. Heretofore there has been little evidence that the EXEC actually reads post on this board! Good to know you guys still interact with us.

Congratulations on a nice regatta - sorry I did not see the link you mentioned until after the fact.

Re: 2015 AGM - Topic: Ratify Emergency Class Rule

Perhaps to come to a fair resolution to the present conundrum we could do 2 things: 1. create a triangular template based on the mast and boom beyond which the GN fitting cannot extend and publish it so manufacturers can comply 2. grandfather in the present fittings This would: 1. prevent even large...

Re: 2015 AGM - Topic: Ratify Emergency Class Rule

There is no compelling reason that existing fittings cannot be excluded for this rule - all it would take is an emergency rule change to be ratified at the next AGM, assuming IOMICA Exec is open to considering that they may have "blown" this one Manufacturers will stop making oversize fittings to co...
