Re: IOMICA Website--What Happened?
I find the forum rather "slow" loads of people seem to view but few actually bother to post anything. I am just building my IOM but I have doubts that IOM will survive long term because of the way the world has changed but IOM havnt: - very few people these days have the skill to build a boat - kits...

Re: New Nylet Spirit is here! Progress at last!
Thanks Bruce, wont be adding any more braces in although the shouds eyes are further back. Had a good pull around and that area is already really strong, and will get even stronger with the deck in place.

Re: New Nylet Spirit is here! Progress at last!
OK final strengthening done, there are brick sh1t houses out there that look flimsy in comparison!!! http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f329/m500dpp/DSC_5826.jpg http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f329/m500dpp/DSC_5827.jpg Next step is the rudder linkage then glue the deck and hull together........ we...

Re: New Nylet Spirit is here! Progress at last!
Thanks Don, it's that kind of strengthening that I am pondering before I get to far and put the deck on!!!!! The instructions show a simple fibreglass tube connecting the areas you suggest, I will use lite ply and maybe glass fibre resin/mat to secure, I dont really trust epoxy in tension! Looking a...

Re: New Nylet Spirit is here! Progress at last!
spent the last week end and all of yesterday replacing a part rotten window sill and repainting the frame and varnishing the door. It's raining today (much needed) so a chance for some me time. Anyway, Radio tray now glassed in: http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f329/m500dpp/DSC_5808.jpg And holes c...

Re: New Nylet Spirit is here! Progress at last!
The batteries finally arrived from Hong Kong, so I can move on a bit further! this is the radio plate lightly tacked in place, everything lines up nicely, so I can now glass it in fully. Am now debating whether I need to brace the keel box more fully to the side of the hull. The radio plate made fro...

Re: New Nylet Spirit is here! Progress at last!
Time for a quick update although progress has been minimal I'm afraid. Firstly I mentioned some nice rig fittings I had found and here they are, laser cut from Stainless. The double hook is particularly neat, I will be using these both on the mast and the boom(s); http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f...

Re: fastening the front track to the deck
Thanks guys. I have put an additional bolt in place which has strengthened it up nicely, and shouldnt get in the way. If it does I can get it out using the hole in the deck that I am going to cut away to save weight! Did try a csk bolt but I would have had to remove a lot of the track to allow the s...

Re: What batteries are people using?
Helpful stuff, thanks Peter. OK I'll use the voltage regulator I bought for the rx and rudder servo but run the winch direct, as it is designed for the higher voltage................ Good warning on the lipos, have seen the videos of them catching fire, but I have also heard of someone loosing sight...

Re: New Nylet Spirit is here! Progress at last!
OK back to more serious stuff. I have remade the servo tray in 6mm liteply, and it now weighs just 20 grams before I start drilling holes in it! Quite tricky this component as the winch drum needs to be the correct height and distance from centreline to pick up the return line in the running rigging...

Richard, you arn't by any chance a Lawyer? :D I know that Frank Parsons, who manufactures this kit is watching this thread (and there's a link from his web site) and no doubt Frank will be commenting at some point. I do know that there a significant number of these boats already competing so measure...

Re: New Nylet Spirit is here! Progress at last!
Well I now have a boat stand! £500 is a bit much I'll admit, but it did come complete with a laser and 3 suits of sails! http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f329/m500dpp/Spirit%20build/DSC_5673.jpg Supposed to be ready for the water, but I have already replaced the horible fishing line with Dyneema an...

Re: New Nylet Spirit is here! Progress at last!
To be honest if it doesnt comply I wont register it I will just sail it! Having started the build I am realising how outdated and daft some of the IOM rules are, its about time IOMs caught up or the class will dissappear. To answer your specific question Richard, the transom is angled inwards so a v...

What batteries are people using?
And how long do they last? I currently am planning on using a 1300 mah Lipo at 78 grams, or if weight in an issue a 900 mah lipo at 50 grams. I may or may not use a voltage reducer (the rx and eurgle winch are rated for this voltage and I suspect the steering servo will survive!) What is everyone el...

Re: How important is weight?
Been weighing again, actually may be pretty close..........can always cut some of the deck out and put patches on, and use a 900 mah battery and just change it more regularly. Also have a savox 256 servo (12 grams) there are a few options left!!!! Has anyone actually got an overweight IOM and is it ...

Re: New Nylet Spirit is here! Progress at last!
Thanks Don. I'll go with it now and maybe change it later or make some sort of cover if it proves to be a problem. Have now taken the rudder out again (!) it goes out of alignment when the deck is put on, so i'll align the rudder after the deck is bonded.

Re: How important is weight?
Thanks Barry, as my first IOM and with so little detailed info on the build of the boats I am erring on the side of caution and adding strength as I think it is required. I also think more weight "may" be better in light winds as there is more momentum when tacking, but whatever it is going to be re...

How important is weight?
I reckon that with the no 1 rig I will be up to 100 grams over the 4kg min weight, my thinking is that this is only 2.5% and at my skill level (begginer!) it is of little consequence, is my thinking correct?

Re: New Nylet Spirit is here! - Progress at last!
So far I have; - cut slot for keel and drilled rudder post - fixed inwales and transom strengthener - Lined up and cut to size keel box - Drilled deck for mast - put 3 bulkheads in place and installed king plank under deck Fitting the keel box took ages, it has to fit right under the deck as precise...

fastening the front track to the deck
the standard design on the Spirit simply has a fastener at each end which allows the track to pull up in the middle! I would like an additional fastener say 1/3rd along from the front to better secure the jib forestay, but am concerned that on smaller rigs I may need to slide the front mount further...

Re: use of carbon fibre to control the rudder?
Ah I was reading D2.4 ball bearings may be used in the rudder control unit and the sheet control unit....... Re: use of carbon fibre to control the rudder?
Thanks Barry. Thats the problem with rules I guess - I am sure it could be arugued that the control rod does not stiffen the hull and equally coming through the decks it has a negative impact on water tightness! no matter, seems I have 2 options: - use a metal control rod above decks - use carbon fi...

Useful links, thank you, there's very little actual info about these winches so this helps. I have two (one as spare) as yet unused as my IOM is in the build phase!
