I agree with Olivier... Having separate rig certificates would just be an unnecessary administration work - without any real benefits... As Lester pointed out - any time you want to assign a certificate to an "entity" you need to assign it some kind of a unique identifier (otherwise, how would you k...

Hi Ralph, I think you may be under a wrong impression of the power that the digital servos (as exerted through a 10cm long arm) can wield. In particular an RMG 280 is far (FAR!) more capable of destructive behaviour (when things snag) than any digital servo configuration I've ever seen. I tested a f...

Hi Barry, I wouldn't call it a waste of time - at least not the part that discussed the issue at hand (the rest - probably)... Anyway - the fact that class introduced a rule change in which it (attempted) to overcome a potential area of conflict in the past - does (certainly) show that the cla...

Hi Roy, I stated my opinion a while back that I would consider Spektrum receivers (DX6 or DX7) a single receiver because it only has one set of "outputs" for the decoded signal (i.e. "useful information"). However, there does seem to be enough many people of different (and equally valid, I'm sure) v...

Well, I'm glad the "tone" of the discussion has taken a turn for the better. Unbelievable as it sounds, a handful of IOM owners can have a civilized (and, at times, a somewhat humorous) discussion over a topic they don't agree on (but only if they try really, really hard). (and this despite th...

Hi Lester, Thoughtful and sensible reply - and I'm pleased to say that most measurers I've encounted tend to follow the approach you've outlined and help guide the process along and make it easy on the owner (where possible). I imagine that the easiest way to introduce the "lowers" into the CRs (if the class so desired) would be to remove (or increase) the limitation on the max height of checkstay rigging point in F.3.4.

Hi Anders, I have always assumed that because it is a kicking strap (and not, say, strut) that it can only work in tension only (and the explicit 1995 wording was thereafter superfluous by F.2.3)... I think ISAF updated the case book for 2005-2008, and case 81 now notes only that 18.2(c) ceases to apply to the boat that tacked, rather than the whole of 18 ceases to apply. This makes quite a difference! I looked up the case in the ISAF (05-08 ) case book and, while you're right that it now says...

First of all let me preface this (again) that the discussion is about a modified scenario where Blue finishes her tack earlier than shown in the diagram! :) I think Steve has said it, RRS 10 is switched off when RRS 18 applies. Hi Steve, I'm not so much having difficulty in going along with Lester on this - in fact, I like the idea that you should not tack in that situation. I hope I was careful enough to say that Blue needs to give room to Green; she is not burdened with keeping clear as far as I can see. Green is protected by 18.2(a), and is entitled to room, so she doesn't have to keep clear, or give room, to Blue. What you said is: Green doesn't have to keep clear ...

So 18 applies. Blue and Green are thus overlapped (Blue threw away her 18.2(c) rights to round without Green getting in her way when she tacked), and I think Green now enjoys 18.2(a) protection as inside overlapped boat from position 6 onwards. Sorry, Steve... (smile) As we agreed - that depends en...

In the example as drawn - I would be inclined to think that in position 6 blue boat is head-to-wind and therefore still tacking (so green need not start evasive action).
