Re: 2015 AGM - Topic: Ratify Emergency Class Rule

Hi Roy, The IOM class rules contains a 'grandfather' clause. A.13.1 (d) A change of class rules that causes equipment in use to cease to be permitted, except where the equipment may comply with the class rules in force at the time of its initial certification measurement. The problem here is that th...

Re: 2015 AGM - Topic: Ratify Emergency Class Rule

This picture was posted on another forum with the question "Is this compliant under this new rule"? The plate connects the vang to the pivot screw - but it is exposed, it rotates, and it is longer than 20mm. Or is the plate part of the vang? Vang plate question.jpg Contrast with second picture where...

Re: Simple Heat Racing System

Regardless of Lester's comments, When I read the documentation chain (attached - extracted from IRSA and IOMICA web sites), I see a different picture. For example the IOMICA Class Championship regulations (that your motion seeks to amend) contains the phrase "Adapted with permission from the IRSA St...

Re: Simple Heat Racing System

Hi Harry, Unfortunately with the IOMICA electronic AGM process, there is no mechanism for an amendment to a motion. There is no need for this motion in the first place. All Croatia has to do is submit the suggestion to the IRSA Rules Committee for acceptance as an approved heat management/scoring sy...

That would be fine, but that is NOT what the motion says. The motion says throw out HMS and use ONLY SHRS.

Re: Simple Heat Racing System

Thanks Harry - suddenly SHRS is not so simple. Lots of decisions to be made about heat size, when to split, how to handle discards . . . Basically SHRS is a heat scheduling system without a scoring system. HMS is a scoring system that supports a heat board. Running a heat board is easy. Setting up a...

Re: 2015 AGM - Topic: Change to Class Championship Rules

Hi Olivier,

I am against the motion because it is unnecessary. We should only modify rules where there is a compelling reason. The existing rules provide adequate description. Modifying them only further complicates the rules and ties the hands of future regatta organizers.

Re: Simple Heat Racing System

I would describe HMS as a ladder system – sail well and you move up the ladder, sail badly and you move down –but other than the first seeding race, you have to sail hard all the time as you are always competing against sailors of similar skills. In HMS, you have the opportunity to move up or down t...

Re: 2015 AGM - Topic: Change to Class Championship Rules

I do not think that we need this rule modification and suggest that we vote against it. The less we alter the ISAF rules and regulations, the easier it is to interpret and apply them. While the current rules specify a minimum of 5 IJs, there is no maximum, and our recent history at Worlds is to use ...

Re: 2015 AGM - Topic: Alternate Scoring System

I believe that this motion is Out of Order as it is not up to the IOMICA but the IRSA to approve the heat management and scoring system for use at Championship events. The IRSA Championship regulations require that the NOR comply with IRSA regulatios, The IRSA NOR requires that the scoring/heat mana...

Re: Flotation

My take is that you could install bulkheads and create watertight compartments. But you cannot drop in air bags as they would not be part of the shell, but neither are they listed as allowable fittings.

Hi Steve,

the answer is easy - when they make a statement like that, just ask them to show you the relevant class rule.

Re: Flotation

The answer should be simple - the IOM Rule is 'closed' - anything not specifically permitted is non-compliant.

So look through the Class Rule and find a section that permits such buoyancy; and if it is not there, then you have your answer.

I can see some advantages – - No waiting for protests, - Max heat size of 16. - Eliminates ‘sailing on the bubble’ effect that happens in a two heat HMS system. But I see some issues that are not listed. - In the Qualifying round heats, the best skippers are spread through the heats, and so each hea...

HI James, Where in the rules does it specifically allow "the panel linking a gooseneck fitting to a kicking strap fitting"? Re: What "..shall pass through a 20mm, ring gauge." BOOM F.

I think the issue is the structure to which these fitting attach. I would call it a sub-assembly. As such is probably falls outside the rules.

You should be able to eliminate it by attaching the fittings directly to and/or inside the boom.

Back to the TS2, should the jib be closer to the deck, if so will there be any benefit? . Looking great - and to answer your question, I would say Yes- as close as possible. Lower to the deck gives an end plate effect to make the sail more efficient, and it lowers the COE of the sail plan, which sh...
