Re: Data transmission from the boat
Hi Peter, Just to clarify. . .what I meant was that regardless of the technology available in the radio system, (whether it is 6 channels or xyz telemetry etc), that we are restricted to only using the two functions, plus battery condition or whatever else we chose to specifie. That way we can still...

Re: Data transmission from the boat
what should be regulated by the IOM class rules is what is received on the transmitter not what is transmitted from the receiver. That sounds like the other side of the same coin. As the systems evolve and more function is added, we may not be able to choose what the Rx sends, nor what the Tx recei...

Re: Data transmission from the boat
Hi Graham, Adding that statement to the MYA standard SI would seem to apply to all classes racing under MYA jurisdiction invoking those SI. However it raises the question of priority. The IOM class rule is more restrictive and would still not allow the battery telemetry unless the SI override the cl...

Re: 2013 World Championships
My view is that we elect an executive to run the association. We delegate to them the responsibility to review bids and make these decisions. The cost of the entry fee is only a small part of the evaluation of a bid. The entry fee is a small part of the total cost of entering a World Championship. T...

Re: Scale to weigh boat
Harbor freight sell a nice digital scale that weighs up to 5kg, suitable for IOMs. It is accurate and repeatable. Sells for under $20. It is easy to calibrate to increase accuracy. I could not find it in the web site today. It is similar to this one, which looks like its big brother. http://www.harb...

Re: New Nylet Spirit is here! Progress at last!
I use lipos and they are great but there are some issues with using them. In the boat you would use a 2s (2 cell) but that gives about 8.6v fully charged, which is too much for normal receiver and servos. So you need a voltage regulator to drop the voltage to (say) 6v. If you use an RMG winch then y...

Re: Single Panel Molded Sails
An interpretation is valid for two years and then expires. The question was raised as the class rules were not sufficiently clear.
Will the exec be providing a motion to revise the wording of the class rules to incorporate this interpretation?
Thanks

Re: IOM Class Rules change proposal-battens, pockets, leech,
One of the reports I read, mentioned Sails Etc sails at the Worlds with reference to the batten reinforcement and flutter patch issue. Yesterday, I got access to a set of Sails Etc A rig. They have both the spreader patch and the flutter patch. I am hard pressed to see how the patch causes a measure...

Re: IOM Class Rules change proposal-battens, pockets, leech,
Having read the proposal, it looks very complex. Is there a simpler way? For example, Both flutter patches and battern pocket patches are defined as secondary reinforcements in the ERS Section G6.2 Flutter patches look like reinforcement at the leach end of the battern. Battern pocket patches are sh...

Re: Single Panel Molded Sails
How about adding words that say that "the method" is unrestricted just so that the number of panels complies. That covers any method of broad seaming, stiching, gluing, or use of heat, force, vacuum etc as a way of creating curvature. Or even specify approved 'methods'.

UK MYA forum virus alert
The last couple of times that I have visited the UK MYA forum, my computer has detected a virus and issues me an alert message requiring that I take action to remove it. It has the name JS/obsfucator. Has anyone else has this problem? I recommend that you not visit the site until this is resolved, u...

Re: Single Panel Molded Sails
Hi Bruce, I doubt that there is any recourse at this point as any reasonable time limit has long expired. I cannot find a copy of the actual SI for the event. Re: Single Panel Molded Sails
Rereading the class rules and the interpretation, I think that these sails are not legal, and were never legal. The interpretation just confirmed that they were not legal. Even if the interpretation expired, the rule has not changed. The sails should not have past initial measurement and should not ...

Re: Single Panel Molded Sails
I would not recommend rushing out and building sails by this method. While the interpretation may have expired, based on the interpretation as not permitted by a 'closed' rule, if it were resubmitted, the ruling would come down the same way. And based on it not being allowed under the concept of 'cl...

Re: New Nylet Spirit is here! Progress at last!
I suggest that you plan to coat the lead with epoxy to give a hard, smooth finish for painting. The paint and epoxy should be about 20 to 25 grams, so you want to get the raw fin/lead down to 2475 to 2480 to allow for finishing.

Re: IOMICA Website--What Happened?
I think that the class is very healthy and doing well. The absence of posts on this forum is not an indicator. We just held the 9th world championship. How do the other international classes (RA, R10, RM) compare. . .not very well! Are the Laser or MM competitors? I think not, for a number of reason...

As this fitting is attached to the hull and not the deck, and it is not projecting beyond the hull, it looks quite legal to me.

I have just started to use liops for both TX and Rx and am delighted with the results. The Tx can go a whole weekend at a regatta on one battery. No knowing how good they were, I bought three Rx and two Tx batteries so I have lots of capacity at an event. Just take the usual precaution about keeping...

Hi Peter,
Try for the intersection of Banks Road and Sandy Road, or S. Parade.
The West Kirby Sailing Club is at the south east corner of the sailing area, near that intersection.

Re: Checkstay - lower shroud
A mast strut has fallen out of fashion since the raised foredeck and the advent of the mast ram. On a flat deck and deck stepped mast, a mast strut was used to brace the lower section of the mast to resist the forces of the goose neck (same function as a ram). The check stays are an alternative to t...

Re: Checkstay - lower shroud
The class rule over-rides the ERS. The height of the attachment on the mast, above the mast heel is no more than 100mm, regardless of the position of the lower limit mark.
The class rules allow only one pair of shrouds.

Re: use of carbon fibre to control the rudder?
- use carbon fibre rod below decks, which would involve shortening the rudder tube significantly. This could be addressed by using a ball race or similar bearing above decks - quite like the idea of this.....will think on. Ball race on rudder is not allowed. (See IOM class rules D 2.3.b which lists...

Hi John, Thank you for your comments. I will comment on the second first as it is simpler. I personally think it is a case of one or the other but not both. I have a tank and it is well traveled. I would be happy to dispense with the fiddling with it to maintain accuracy - especially on cold days. ...

Re: Dry or Waterless Measuring
The dry measure looks very attractive as it is much faster and easier than the floatation tank. It is possible to conceive of hulls that could exploit the dry measure jig, eg a very narrow deep ‘U’ shaped hull that would measure in, but would float much lower end exceed the 60mm depth and max depth ...
