Re: New Nylet Spirit is here! Progress at last!
Firstly I am pleased to see Nigel is making good use of the yacht and I look forward to seeing some photos of it on the water where it should be. Despite the issues I had I believe the yacht was actually pretty well built in the end, with everything well aligned. Nigel, try moving the winches by han...

Re: What batteries are people using?
Guys, To confirm for total clarity the 1000 mah 2s LI FE battery weighs 49 grams, the 1600 2s comes in as stated at 76 grams. I think these are a good option, personally I use Lipo without concern, the fires etc that you see on youtube are caused by deliberate abuse. We must be aware that all cells ...

Re: What batteries are people using?
Have found some LIFE battery packs that look totally suitable and I can use them without a voltage regulator - worth a look:

The 1600 mah @ 68 grams looks a decent weight/price/capacity ratio............

Re: New Nylet Spirit is here! Progress at last!
Thanks Morgan. Too late I'm afraid, have already drilled round holes!!!! The alternative of using hooks will I think also potentially twist, will see what happens when I put tension on and think about it then if it's an issue. mmmm Not sure I wouldnt trust the nut not to come loose, and drop the bul...

Re: New Nylet Spirit is here! Progress at last!
True Bruce, but the wood forces a bit more glue on the join, 1mm mahagony weighs nothing and looks good in a retro type way!
Will post pics once I have varnished them!!!!!
To be fair the joints looked pretty decent anyway......could have just left it.

Re: New Nylet Spirit is here! Progress at last!
Well the next task is to fit the shrouds so I can progress with the rigging. I had already strengthened the area where the shrouds fit, and it's simple enough to drill the holes, but fitting the nuts was always going to be a challenge! In the event it was really simple, I made a "spanner" out of sof...

Re: New Nylet Spirit is here! Progress at last!
So, tape is off and the joint appears to be very sound. Deck trimmed back ready to put a strip of 1mm x 5mm along the top to neaten the joint further. Re: New Nylet Spirit is here! Progress at last!
OK tape is off and the bond is good. Have started trimming the overlap and it's looking good. Am considering putting a thin strip of varnished wood (1mm x 4mm or there abouts) over the join, this will tidy it and make the joint totally watertight - not necesary but will look nice and will add to my ...

Re: New Nylet Spirit is here! Progress at last!
OK well I have just re glued the hull and deck, no pictures as it looks just like it did before. Will it work this time? I am not going to touch it for a few days, maybe not until next week end. So what have I done differently? - Used Devcon 2 ton rather than 30 minute epoxy - NOT added microballons...

Re: New Nylet Spirit is here! Progress at last!
Thanks Don I suspected as much. Its getting cold over here which will keep the resin a bit thicker and slow the cure. All of the epoxy glue is off the hull and woodwork, easy to do with a heat gun and sharp chisel! At least I am back to square one without any damage. With regard to the keel box I fo...

Re: New Nylet Spirit is here! Progress at last!
To quote from the Kingston Mouldings site: It’s quite simple to bond wood securely to GRP. The first step is to lightly sand all areas where adhesive will be applied, brush and/or vacuum to remove dust and loose fibres, and finally wipe clean with a little acetone or cellulose thinners on a rag, bef...

Re: New Nylet Spirit is here! Progress at last!
Well guys I am still kicking around! Re: New Nylet Spirit is here! Progress at last!
Some great advice coming out here, its helping me and I hope its helping others! Disaster, the epoxy did not grab the glass fibre at all!!! (I have never really liked epoxy for this sort of join) so deck is off again and plan b is to use glass fibre resin and a strip of glass tape around the joint, ...

Thanks Dave, Good advice which I hope others following this thread (if there are any!) will follow. I spend a lot of time on my modelling, and as you say I am in no great hurry. Fair point Frank, but the rx is waterproof and the lipo cells are sealed. This may not be enough, in which case i will have a re think............time will tell. Still not joined the hull, but only just got back from Holiday!

Re: New Nylet Spirit is here! Progress at last!
Well its been a long time as I have been diverted sailing the laser and getting back into Mardave 1/12th scale cars, but some more progress has now been made. Here is the final top deck layout with a waterproof switch, not entirely sure about the viability of using a switch but I can easily change t...

Yes the problem these days is that everyone wants instant success or they give up! I sailed my lase...

Re: New Nylet Spirit is here! Progress at last!
Bit of modest progress, the dirty great lump of lead is now provisionally attached to the keel. the instructions suggest that 360mm of the keel should project, I am at 357mm, close enough. When the boat is measured I may find I can add some material to the rear sloping edge of the keel that goes int...

Re: IOMICA Website--What Happened?
How old is the youngest member of your club? Our "youngster" is 54! Well I am building my first IOM at 58, and I am one of the few at the club I am joining who isnt retired! Is the class dying because it's too technical or expensive? I doubt it. The IOM rule, while long and complex, keeps thousands...
