Re: Scale to weigh boat

I think this is the item John referenced: http://www.harborfreight.com/digital-scale-95364.html To calibrate it, the manual says to use two 2500 g weights. A very nice touch for a $20 scale. Of course, a 2500 g weight certified to M1 standard would probably cost around $40. (I couldn't find a suppli...

Re: Scale to weigh boat

In my experience, the real issue isn't the scales -- almost anything with a 1 gram resolution will work, particularly for keeping track of other IOM weight budget items such as batteries, and 2 grams is OK, though 5 grams resolution is only good for the whole boat's 4 kg. No, the real issue accuracy...

IRSA holds IOM Worlds, approves Championship rules for Euro

I was amazed to read this month's MYA "Acquaint" magazine, where IRSA Publicity Officer Robert Hobbs tells us "This year we [IRSA] have held an IOM World Championship", and "Addendum Q, HMS 2007 and SYRPH were formally recognised recognised and were updated for use in the Association [IRSA] Champion...

Re: Moulded sails -- future rule change?

I would be reluctant to change the rules at this moment possibly closing the door on a technology that is going to see equipment cost come down instead of going up. Hi Nigel This is a key point, of course. My thinking is that there is a profound difference between closing an opened door, and openin...

Moulded sails -- future rule change?

Now that we have the interpretation, it might be worth discussing any future rule change -- do we actually want moulded sails in the class, or not? There are pros and cons. Moulded sails for our toy boats is a 'new' technology which may in the long term make all our lives easier. In ten years time w...

Re: Distance between marks

Hi Alfonso Might be worth updating the IOMICA manual on a couple of changes following the latest ERS. Some I know about include the change of terminology from 'measurer' to 'equipment inspector', and the fact that the equipment inspector is a person appointed by the Race Committee (not the organisin...

Re: New Country Joining IOMICA

I believe IOMICA Regulation 3.4 may apply (applications shall be publicly announced).

There are usually good reasons for initial discussions to be relatively confidential, but now that the MYA has leaked this information, there seems a good case for the Exec to let us know more details.

Re: IOMICA Fees

While I'm sure Neil and Richard have the best interests of the IOM Class at heart (who doesn't?), I don't know that the lack of compliance of event organisers with IOMICA policy is to be laid at Alfonso's door. I'd first ask the event organisers themselves (they know who they are!) to tell us when t...

Re: 2010 AGM Agenda and Notice of Meeting

I'm a little hazy on the regulations, but I see from the agenda that only two officers have been nominated for the Exec (both unopposed). The World Council will only be 'voting' for these two candidates, hence no others will or can be elected, and so the incoming Exec will consist of exactly two per...

Approval for European Championships

Here is something not too many people know -- class 'European Championships' are controlled by Eurosaf in the same way that class 'World Championships' are controlled by ISAF. In both cases, authority is delegated to ISAF-RSD to approve such championships. At http://www.eurosaf.org/1055 we may read:...

Re: Breaking of ties in HMS 2007

I think that there are two approaches to ensuring proper integration between HMS and SIs. One way is to construct SIs which treats HMS as a separate set of rules. Another way is to make HMS a part of the SIs. At present, IOMICA SIs take the first approach, but do not always correctly connect the HMS...

Re: Request for Interpretation from GBR NCA (MYA)

The GBR request raises an interesting constitutional question. The MYA letter says (footnote) that it is "Affiliated to the ISAF – IRSA". As far as I know, there is no organisation called "ISAF-IRSA", and as far as I know IOMICA and Division Members should be affiliated to ISAF-RSD. Can a formal req...

Hi Henry Using tie-breaking to deal with the problem of which boats to demote if, say, 5 are all OCS or whatever, is what I'd do as a Race Officer. It was done that way, as I recall, at the Euros in St Cyr in 2000, when the first boat finished in one of the "A" heats and the other 19 boats were time...

It is an easy score to note that the press release announces an unconstitutional (and hence illegal) action as the only concrete outcome of the ISAF - RSD meeting. Hi James Interesting idea! Perhaps Robert Grubisa will be able to jump in here to offer a point of view.
