Re: Weeds

Hi Roy, Interesting question. Here are the rules I see that apply directly. Rule 4 decision to race This suggests that the sailor, knowing that there may be weeds, decides to start and continue in the race, acccepts the chance of being affected by weeds. R 32.1.e abandon after the start for any othe...

Re: Typical weight of a No 1 rig?

To add to what Bruce has said, here is one additional suggestion to avoid disturbing the fin box by removing the fin during setup. I taped the fin around where it exits the hull with two inch mylar packing tape, and coated that with parting agent. Then I left the fin in place while the epoxy sets up...

Hi Andy and welcome. Re: How many Actually Voted - 2010 AGM

Hi Tony, I think you are overlooking one important fact. The Secretary, Barry Fox posted all the resolutions as individual topics on the forum under the general heading of 2010 Agenda resolutions in mid-September. This was a great help and allowed debate on the more complex items for almost 2 months...

Re: How many Actually Voted - 2010 AGM

These stats are both scary and appalling. The disinterest in the class rules is a warning for the future. You get the rules you deserve, either by action or, in this case by neglect. While some of this year's motions were housekeeping, there were 4 really important and significant items, yet few sho...

Re: IOMICA Fees

The first proposal if approved, will not help reduce the cost of the IOM Worlds. There are several issues. First, the Worlds uses Umpires to make calls on the course. (A jury sits in a hearing room and hears protests, observes just call contact and leave the decisions to the skippers). Second, the I...

Re: Graupner vs RMG sailwinch

For an inexpensive sail winch, the Hitec HS 815 arm winch is a bargain. lots of travel (about 140 degrees), fast, powerful and very reliable at just $50. It weighs a bit more than the latest digital servos but is not heavier than an RMG. The HS785 drum winch at the same price has the power and the t...

the flow of water inside the boundary layer.

Re: IOM European Championships 2010 => FRA Pierrelatte

One problem that comes with the success of the IOM class is the large fleet that assembles for major events. This requires us to run heats. To minimise protest hearings we have ‘on the water’ calls and ‘no appeals’ to ensure no adjustments to the promotion/relegations implicit in the HMS heat system...

Hi Oliver,

I am getting the video in Canada ok. The only problem is that the aspect ratio is distorted. The picture is too tall, so people are tall and skinny and the rigs and fins all look way too long.

Barbados has issues a new series of postage stamps recognizing sailing.

Just look closely at the class featured on the 'most' expensive stamp.

Re: Hull Construction

I found the AMYA US1M construction guide the most useful.

http://www.theamya.org/boats/us1m/us1mcons.php

While I have made a fin out of a balsa, ply sandwich covered in glass, the CF fins are much better. Unless you get into vacuum bagging, it is easier to buy the CF foils.

Re: Hull Construction

I think that the issue of spectra or dyneema is a bit more complex than just a 'no'. According to Wikipedia, they are brand names from two manufacturers for the same thing. Also from Wikipedia, they are thermoplastics (long chain polymers). The closest document that I could find was the rules interp...

Glass over balsa is allowed. I have built several this way. The rule about being able to inspect the layup applies to 'all-glass' hulls.

Acces to the USA IOM forum?

For the last two days, I have not been able to log onto the US IOM forum at http://onemetre.sbmyc.com and get a scripting error.

Is anyone else having this problem, or is it just me. (I have tried deleting the cookie and tried to log in again, but it still fails).

Thanks

Hi Robert,

It might be better to move this topic over to the RC sailing forum, as that forum has a lot more scratch builders who can chime in. Another advantage is that it is possible to post construction photographs and that will aid answers.

Re: All-wood Hull to scratch build?

Triple Crown plans are published by the UK MYA

http://www.mya-uk.org.uk/suppliers/triplecrown.html

You can buy the complete plans, or download the PDF. The PDF sections are full sized. Note that the lines show the outside dimensions and must be reduced by the thickness of the planks.

I have built the Triple Crown, but I prefer the EMO from Frank Russell. The EOM is easier to build as...

If you are running an RMG winch, then consider the 9.6v 1200ma pack. (especially if you have some corrector weights that you could remove to counter the slight extra weight over the 6v pack). The RMG should really fly on 9.6v LiFePO batteries. http://www.batteryspace.com/lifepo418650battery96v1200ma...
