Re: Sheeting angle
Hi Colin, as no one else has replied on this, I'll have a go. I think you are referring to a 'sheeting post'. On a big boat sailing close hauled, the main sheet controls the twist in the main and the traveller is used to control the angle of attack - the sheeting angle. As the traveller is let out t...

Re: RMG winch set up with Spektrum DX6i
Hi Dave, Rob Guyatt discusses this at length on the RMG web site https://www.rmgsailwinch.com.au/rmg/pages/SmartWinch-%26-2.4GHz-Radios.html So the answer will vary based on the model of RMG that you have. One issue with the older winches and Spektrum is that you had to pull the power/signal lead fr...

Re: IOM set up with DX7s
Hi Adam, I don't have the Spektrum, so I cannot give specific instructions. D/R and EXPO are covered on page 17 of the manual. It should not be hard to do. Go into the programming and scroll through the functions until you get to D/R and then select CH1 (for your rudder). With the D/R switch up - se...

Re: Drum winch at lowish price
This was not the answer to your question, but the HS815 arm winch works great in an IOM. Similar price to the 785, and faster than the RMG. Add a block to the end of the arm and you can double the sheet travel.

Re: Drum winch at lowish price
Additional thought. If you go with the HS785, I suggest mount it on a mounting board, then mount the board in the boat. That way, if you later get an RMG, you can mount the RMG on a board and fit that into the same mount.

Re: Drum winch at lowish price
I used an HS785 on my first IOM and it worked ok. Yes, it is slow, so you have to be smooth and anticipate trimming as you round a mark, for example. It is very reliable. Main issues with the slow speed is that you cannot 'snap' gybe and sometimes you can be 'chasing' the trim, moving in and out, tr...

As you are in England, you should go to the MYA web site.
They have a forum where you can post the question again.
http://www.mya-uk-forum.org.uk/phpBB3/index.php
Or contact John Taylor the IOM class secretary for help.

Sorry Lester, but I stand by my comments. The current format of the board includes a regional officer for each continental zone. The changes you propose are not yet made. To implement them requires the support and/or voting of the (new) board members. It requires preparation of changes to the consti...

Re: IRSA elections, CEEFIE newsletter #7, Voting & Transpare
I am appalled that CEEFIE in its desire to propose an officer for every position would be so disingenuous as to propose someone from Europe to be the Regional Officer representative for the AMERICAS. This is an insult to all the sailors of the Americas. I urge Patrice to correct this situation by wi...

Re: ISAF Case Book 2013 - 2016 is now available
There are three new cases in the Supplement that are interesting and very applicable to RC sailing. and are worth reading in full. From the previous discussions and the provided judge’s opinion, this is my summary of where we are. Appendix E.6.6.f says that to gain redress you must be disabled and retire. But Case 44 and the judge’s opinion say that if you retire, you affect your finish position by your own action and thereby l...

Re: Redress...
Hi Bruce, I don't think your suggestion resolves the problem. The main issue lies in E.6.6.f which says that being disabled, you have to retire to get redress. (Not how disabled is described) I have seen some correspondence that indicates that an ISAF Case Book Case #44 applies. If that case is used...

Re: Widget Receiver
Changing the Rx should not have any effect on the RMG and its settings. Changing Transmitter may have an effect, if you have used the Tx programming to set limits (this is not recommended in the manual and so should not be an issue to the RMG) . Also applying servo reverse to the Tx for that channel...

Re: Redress...
Hi Barry,
I would suggest 'No'.
To get redress Appendix E6.6.f says you must be disabled and retire. And the definition of disabled says 'unable to race'. So being damaged, but able to continue sailing slower, falls short of the definition and the rule requirements.

I agree with you Roy. I sent in a document to the IRSA Racing Rules committee a few weeks ago that included this item for inclusion in the considerations for the next iteration of Appendix E. Hi Olivier, Great to have you join the discussion. I disagree with your view and it comes down to use of English. The definition of Disabled says essentially, unable to race. So to me, entangled is a subset of Disabled. While you are entangled, you are unable to race, and so fit the definition. So i...

Hi Ted, What I am suggesting is that at a point in time, when you are 'entangled'. you are effectively 'disabled' per the definition. You cannot predict the future,, so you cannot assume that you will become free as any point in the future - so it is probably in your interest to claim disabled and r...

Re: Redress...
Hi Roy, I don't agree with that approach. The problem at the Worlds happened because they added 'entangled' as grounds for redress. I think the current rule is ok if you look at it this way. You are ROW and a Keep Clear boat fouls you and hooks up with your rigging. At that point, you can call Prote...

Re: Redress...
To provide a contrast to the above scenario, here is what happened at the 2013 Words in Israel in Race 11 , A fleet. The leading boat rounded the last mark (a gate) to port and shortly thereafter, tacked on to stbd and then collided and became entangled with a following boat. This allowed the second...

Re: Redress...
Hi Roy, I was there and saw the aftermath of the incident. As I understand it, three boats all on stbd, and overlapped, became entangled on the start line and drifted back, locked together until they drifted to the shore, where someone untangled them. One boat had a damaged rudder, one boat was unda...

Re: Interpretation of IOM CR - wind indicators & telltales
There may be a simpler way to look at these questions and that is to focus on the word 'optional'. While we think of optional as the presence or absence of . . .it could also relate to the location being optional - ie anywhere. So for Q1, anywhere on the mast or masthead fitting or standing rigging....
