Standing Rigging

Post by PhilWatkins » 15 Jan 2013, 19:22

Hi everyone,

Happy New Year :)

A couple of questions regarding shrouds and the back-stay.

Do people use single strand or multiple strand wire and why?
What diameter wire do you use for shrouds and back-stay?

Clip on spreaders good or bad?

Thanks in advance for your views.

I've used both:

0.025 SS wire - theoretically less windage because it's smooth (but probably not a detectable amount) - terminal connections more difficult - tough to control once off the boat (unless the wire is straight to begin with) - IMHO, looks better

Braided cable - terminal connections easy (swedge) - easy to control when un-rigged - perhaps less prone to kinking if caught in the hinge of your rig box - easy to carry spare shrouds with you

I've never had either break (except for a brief experiment with Ti wire!) so strength is not an issue

If I've got the time, I use solid wire - If I need to knock out a rig quickly or am feeling lazy, I use braided cable

IMHO, you can't go wrong with either
