I see that the site is down again. What a shame. I very much enjoyed it.

Maybe somebody here has a friendly server you can host it on. What was it about the site that upset Tripod? Too much traffic?

"The Sailor" site down

Post by JohnM » 30 Dec 2004, 17:09

Hey Muzza
I had no problems with Tripod or even trafic
THE PROBLEM IS ME
As you know IOMICA has a new Vice-Chairman InfoComms and he sent me a mail

"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
Hello "The Sailor" !

I am writing to you as of the IOMICA. My
resoponsibility in the IOMICA is taking care of the IOMICA
website(www.iomclass.org) and publicity. I've found your website at
the-sailor1.tripod.com informative and interesting. However there are a
couple of things that I would like you to change.

on your page
http://the-sailor1.tripod.com/id72.htm'

you have a list of IOM class rule interpretations together with
downloadable pdf files hosted on your website.
The IOMICA encourages discussion and comments etc. to be made about the
class rules, the class rule changes and the class rule interpretations.
However, the rules, changes, and interpretations, are official IOM Class
documents and to prevent cofusion with several versions etc. we would
like these documents to be hosted only on the IOMICA and ISAF-RSD sites.
Please could you remove the pdf files with rule interpretations that you
host on your website.
If you want to link to these documents please link to the IOMICA site or
the ISAF-RSD site.
....... To miminize the amount of unwanted spam email we do not want URLs
directly to the emails to be hosted on the web.
Please link to the contacts page on the IOMICA website:
http://www.iomclass.org/contacts.htm

Please consider also if the other people whos email addresses you list
on your page actually want their addresses visible on your website.

Thanks,

I ACCEPT ANY OPINION AND HELP TO MAKE "THE SAILOR" SITE BIGGER AND BETTER:
WHAT I REALLY DON'T LIKE IS PRESSION FROM ANYONE EVEN COMMERCIAL OR NOT

I made this Site to all of us who are NAVIGA, IOMICA, MARBLEHEAD, and so on
The best thing I had with this is an honest fun
Honest because I tried to search the most useful and interesting subjects we need.
Honest because (with a main interest in IOM boats) I made a comprehensible way to resume those designs that we all found "first order"and so on.
It was a petty, but the first thing I wanted for "The Sailor" Site is let it die without updating it several times a week even a day.

Regards to all

Anders hardly applied "pressure". It was reasonable, full of common sense, and, with the invitation to link directly to his document urls, very useful as well.

I would appreciate if JohnM (or anyone else) would ask for permission before posting private emails on the forum.

My comments, sent directly to "JohnM" by email, can hardly be the reason why why tripod has (multiple times) decided to shut down the site.
Neither I nor anyone else from the IOMICA has been in contact with any ISPs or anything like that.

From what I remember "the sailor" website contained a lot of useful original information and also many "borrowed" pages, texts and images. My guess is that someone who owns the copyright to this borrowed material was not happy about the situation and contacted tripod.

The policy of not having official IOMICA documents(class rules, changes, interpretations, IOMICA constitution, regulations etc) anywhere else than on the IOMICA site is I think a good one. Having this kind of official information scattered around multiple websites with possibly multiple versions, some outdated, is not the way to go.

Happy new year,

Helo Anders

It is not the first time we change personal mails. As you remember, after I published some photos of yours, I've asked you first. I have made, with other material that not belongs to me, in a same way: I ask permission first. My intent to republish those articles or photos is to make a link to the subject in reference and to emphasize what I want to tell in a Site dedicated only to Model r/c boats with the best articles I could find after a rigorous search.
Regarding “serverâ€

OK, so I guess you are updating the site right now and removing the class rule interpretation pdfs and perhaps the direct links to a number of email addresses on your link page.
I hope your site will be back online soon.

Hello JohnM

Just an idea. On my site I also have a few official documents from Naviga and ISAF too. But I make a link to the pdf-s on the original site. So if the document changes, it changes on my site too, or if it is no longar valid, it doesen't appears any more. This way the documents remains hosted on the official sites.

Anders, is it OK this way?

Ref e-mail address, I recently had to change my e-mail address bacause of spam. Since then I dont put my adress as a link on my site, but as an image so if somebody wants to send me a mail he must copy the address from the picture. Something like on Lester's site.

So I wish a Happy new Year to everybody, and hope to see The Sailor soon
