computer radios and air travel

Does airprt security effect computer radios? Is carry on or checked better for this?

I flew to Vancouver03 and Arcos04 with everything (boat,sails,keel,radio,batteries etc.) as checked baggage. They will probably want to open the box for inspection so I was advised not to lock the box.

In the US it would be next to impossible to carry on an r/c transmitter. It likely fits within the "no tools on board" ban. However, I've taken my radio numerous times in checked luggage and there has never been a problem. One thing to do is to try to check in a little early to give them time to talk to you if the TSA has any questions.

Thankx Anders and Roy.
What about the machinery used to check the baggage (like X-ray, MRI, EEG or EKG [sorry the alphabet got away from me]), does it effect the computer in the radio?

Surprisingly enough, they will let you carry on an RC transmitter. Dick Carver has carried his on every trip he has made. I have done it maybe 75% carry on, the rest as baggage or shipped FedEx previous. I did it in 2001, just 3 weeks after 911, going to New York no less!
They will certainly check it as you go through carry on baggage check, so allow for extra time there. Some of the less experienced get pretty wide -eyed when they see my transmitter, all my NiCad's, my charger, and a bunch of charge wires all bunched up. Usually they'll close it back up real quick and call for a supervisor. The better trained checkers know what it is and they'll let it go.
No worries if you dont mind the extra time.

Steve: I think the policy on carry on has changed. Last two trips I was told about the current "no tools" on the plane rule. This meant they seized from me a couple of two inch, blunt headed micro allen wrenches.
I have a feeling under that policy a radio and charger and wires has a real good shot of not making it on the plane...
As to the effect of the x-ray and scanner on the computer radio, to date, and its been at least thirty times, there has been no effect whatsoever on the computer radio or the programming.

Possibly, Roy.
I did carry on my Tx to Florida from CA just 2 months ago though. If there have been any changes, it's been recent.
