Scoring at Arcos

Post by mark » 18 Oct 2004, 06:46

Looking at the results from Arcos, there was 82 entries.
Bamforth shows as getting the following points in the last couple of races:
58 67 83 86 85 83

83 i understand as # of starters +1 which is common.

But # of starters +3 and + 4, what results drove that scoring?

Thanks,

Mark

It is a puzzle. Three competitors have the same pattern, Landeau, Bamforth, and Beacroft. In George Beacroft's case, he clearly retired from the event around race 10, and scored 83 after that, apart from the blips in races 16 and 15.

Here is a possible answer. The "old" SIs for the event provided a four-point penalty:
'Old' SIs for event wrote:In the case of an incident not judged by an Umpire, a competitor may protest according to rule 61.2 as modified by rule E5.3 except for any incidents involving serious damage under rule E 3.1(d). If the protest is upheld by the protest committee, the penalty for breaking rule 31.1, 42, 44 or a rule of Part 2, except rule 14 when serious damage resulted from contact, shall be 4 points as further defined in rule 44.3(c). A 4-point penalty imposed under this rule shall not change the placing of the penalized boat for the heat in question. The penalty for breaking other rules may be any other penalty by the decision of the protest committee according to rules 64.1 and E5.8.
Perhaps the scoring system was not changed when the "revised" SIs were issued at the event itself, when this provision was removed. (I wasn't there, so don't know, but maybe the revised SIs were further revised to re-introduce this penalty... )

Thanks for digging out the old SI's, this does look like the driver for the scores. I'm sure this will unfold & we'll get all the details over the next couple of days, as it is interesting the pattern of scores :D

Thanks,

Mark
