Discussion:

I agree with the idea in principal.
However I feel the actual rules will need a little more work.
If a slit is cut into the sail it will need to be joined in some manner?
For a conventional broad seam joint there are plenty of controls over seam width, number of seams etc etc, shouldn't these be included in the "slit" rule?
Will a pair of slits (one at the luff & one at the leach) be the same as a seam?

The ERS definition for seam is:
"overlap where two or more ply forming the body of the sail are joined"

A 'ply' is 'a sheet of sail material'

So is the join between the two parts of the slit an ERS seam ??

How many slits would be allowed ? ( three for main, two for jib ?)

The proposed rule change needs to be revised at least with these specifications before it makes sense to vote about it.

Could I just add to Anders comments that this proposal was rejected at the last AGM. With out clarification of a slit, its length, number etc this simple change ( with good intent) has the potential to create complex sails outside the current rules of 4 panel 3 seam Main etc.
Could i suggest that the clarification of the split be requested and then from that a rewording of the proposal.
