Newbie here with a couple of questions

Post by Peter_Nicholls » 13 Aug 2006, 19:41

Firstly let me introduce myself.

I am Pete Nicholls of Gosport UK, I recently got hooked by the IOM bug and have now been sailing for over a month! my current yacht is a GB Nimbus 2 she is a bit heavy and is not overly keen in high winds (she acts more like a sub :) ) I have raced a few sundays and thursday mornings but keep coming in at the back of the fleet :( this is probably down to severe lack of experience on my part). no problem though as I thoroughly enjoy every minute.

I will shortly be the proud owner of another yacht, I picked it up on Ebay, It is described as a "Parasite" does anyone out there know this design?

Is there anywhere on the web that I could get some general tips (basic ones) about setting up the rigs for best performance preferably in picture format or drawings etc?

I have trawled most of the sites that appear on google search and would like to say that some have been very helpfull, Lester Gilberts site is crammed full of info, thankyou Lester, I'm still visiting regularly, atleast I have learned that a leech does not always suck blood and that a bowsie does not frequent strange bars for men!

Special thanks to all the guys at Gosport model yacht and boat club for giving me the bug, I am enjoying it :D and I hope to for many years to come

Here are a couple of web sites with basic tuning tips.

( while this is intended for the Soling 1M, the general concepts apply)

Hello Pete,

Welcome aboard! I don’t know the Parasite, the only information I can find is that it’s built, or a least was, by Derek Priestly. His contact details, from the AMYA funnily enough: 120 Abercrombie Rd., Fleetwood, Lancs. FY7 7AY. 01253 779764. It might be worth a phone call.

Bob Sterne has some interesting things to say about rig tuning:

http://www.myrc.org/bobsboatyard/tunecyc.htm

My tuppence worth would be to start with basic settings; Lester Gilbert has some good advice on what they should be:

Then go sailing, stand next to the fast guys and ask lots of questions.

Cheers

BlackMagick Sails has a few pages that I've found interesting and helpful. Here's a good place to start:

BTW, I have a suit of their sails, and like them.
