Normally I just loosen up the kicking strap and the cunningham. This relieves the strain on the mainsail.

I´ve been doing this for years with no damage to the sails.

Hi John, I have built a Zig-Zag and found it´s handling very good. The first time that I sailed it was in top of rig 1 conditions and I found that the nosediving was very minimal and when it did nosedive it recovered very quickly.
