It appears from this post on the Kiwi Radio Yachting Forum that Martin Firebrace (2 Dogs, 3 Dogs, Ericca and other designs) has passed away. :(

One day regatta in Holland - february 4 2007

I note that Dutch National Authority is hosting a one-day regatta on February 4th near Gouda. There is a posting on the German RC Network discussion forum here...

Large rubgy competition eh Steve? You might find that some Brits, French, and Australians, and EVERY New Zealander and South African might consider that an understatement.

It's the Rugby World Cup, and Marseille is the venue for six matches between September 8th and October 7th.

Successful initiatives to encourage entry to the class via a budget route can be taken at club level. All that is needed is to pick a design that is in the public domain, or obtain one from a designer, build some club molds, and provide club support to prospective owners via, say, building workshops...

Looking good Mike.

As you play with it a bit more, you might want to reduce the freeboard a little. You seem to have plenty to spare at present.

The tumblehome is classic early 1970s IOR. :-)

Great stuff!

Alan It was a reference to Mr Smales' multiple successes over the years. One of my earliest sailing memories as a youngster was watching some Flying Dutchmans training off Takapuna. I was told that one of the boats was current national champ, and was training for the Olympics. It was being sailed by...

Great to see Geoff Smale in No. 1 spot again.

Glenn Cochrane seems to be getting better with every regatta. Looks like he's completed his "conversion" to RC from the full sized equivalent.

I hope there will be some pictures posted soon.

Ed,

Model sailboats have often preceded keelboats in design - but what specifically has grabbed your attention in the photo? Is it the relatively short length of the bulb compared to the length of the boats? The shape of the bulb, or something else?

Just curious.

Irrespective of any international rules re eligibility - this country had its own rules....

IOMs make front page of Sailing Anarchy

The IOM has made the "front page" of big boat online sailing magazine, Sailing Anarchy today. http://www.sailinganarchy.com/

One of Nick Lindsley's images, featuring a Cockatoo and Nick's Ares is featured about halfway down the page.

Well done Nick - great profile for the class.

Paul I'll assume your hull core material is balsa - in which case you really do need to glass the outside as it has insufficient impact resistance otherwise (IMHO). On my boat, I applied two coats of epoxy undercoat, slightly thinned, by hand. I then wet sanded these right back until there was almos...

Just to add to Arvin's comments, but in this context (IOM specific):- Checkstays are the sidestays joining the mast a short distance above the deck. They are optional IF the boat does not use a mast ram - or "mast strut" as the rules call it (which most IOMs do use). For an example of an IOM with ch...

The only people there will be those training - they'll be lane swimming and totally disinterested in the twat with the model boat. You can cl...

The IOM and the US One Meter are quite different boats, and although an IOM could meet the USOM rules (with a different rig), most USOM designs are too light to meet the IOM minimum class weight of 4kg. There are other differences - best understood by ...
