Re: Interpretation of IOM CR - wind indicators & telltales

Hi Jon A couple of comments on process. It would be easy for IOMICA to subsequently define tell tails Not so sure that this would be *easy*...! It would be a class rule change, and so the necessary words would need to be carefully drafted by the TC, published for comments and criticism, re-drafted i...

Re: Interpretation of IOM CR - wind indicators & telltales

I would agree that "other parts as permitted by class rules" should be measured, and so tell-tales flying aft of the leech would probably fail measurement. Not quite contrary to the proposed interpretation, since (strictly speaking), a tell-tale flying aft of the leech is permitted if it flies insid...

IRSA elections, CEEFIE January news

We recently circulated a newsletter to the IRSA DNM Electors from Graham Bantock and Lester Gilbert regarding the IRSA EC elections. IOM sailors might find it interesting. Dear IRSA DNM We thought you might find it helpful to hear from us, as we are candidates for the IRSA Executive Committee. We ha...

NCA-specific measurement forms

My NCA has advised me (as an "official measurer") about an issue with a typo on its measurement form: There was a typo in item 11 on this form, in the Rig 2 box dimension. This should read 160 mm and not 260 mm. This has now been corrected and attached is the replacement PDF with the later date pref...

IOMICA measurement interpretation

My NCA has advised me (as an "official measurer") about an issue with the Certification Measurement Form: The MYA tech team asked IOMICA for an interpretation on who is the builder and who should sign the declaration. The response is as follows. Where a boat is supplied 'ready to sail' from one manu...

Re: New RRS E6.6 - no redress for entanglement any more...

I think it is a reasonable reading of the rule that a boat may file for redress if she meets the definition 'disabled' even if for a short time, however, clearly she must retire to make the claim I think your reading is what we might have hoped the rule would say, that is, you can seek redress if y...

Rescuing a disabled boat, defining the control area

There are some interesting wrinkles introduced by the rule changes on control areas and on rescue when disabled. We know that, under the new rules, if you receive help from the rescue boat (or anyone else not involved in your entanglement) you must retire, and if you continue racing you will be prot...

Re: New RRS E6.6 - no redress for entanglement any more...

I have just found a relevant document on the ISAF Web site by Googling "Supporting Paper for Submission 201-11". It is at http://www.sailing.org/24289.php, and is a PDF which explains the reasoning behind most (but not all) of the Appendix E changes. This is what is says about E6.6(f): In (f), care ...

Re: New RRS E6.6 - no redress for entanglement any more...

The reason for you retiring is not relevant I think it is the rule itself which makes the reason relevant: E6.6(f) "becoming disabled and as a result retiring" Let's try some "what if's": (1) After surgery, the patient could talk again. (2) After surgery, the patient celebrated his 50th birthday. N...

Re: New RRS E6.6 - no redress for entanglement any more...

The safest way is to call that you are retiring while still 'disabled'. Hi John I guess it might be advisable to retire while still disabled, certainly, but (in my scenario) was your retirement *a result* of becoming disabled? Or as a result of becoming annoyed at being robbed of second place? FWIW...

New RRS E6.6 - no redress for entanglement any more...

The 2013-2016 RRS has a changed rule on when you can ask for redress: E6.6 Redress Add to rule 62.1: (f) becoming disabled and as a result retiring because of the action of a boat that was breaking a rule of Part 2 or of a vessel not racing that was required to keep clear. It may be helpful to recal...

Resolution 6.7, November 2012

A number of radio sailing designers, manufacturers, and owners have such reservations about IOMICA Resolution 6.7 of November 2012 that they have written a note to IOMICA ( http://www.onemetre.net/OtherTopics/IOMclass/Coloured%20resin.htm ) on the matter. Readers will recognise that the note seeks t...

Re: Changes to Class Rule G.3.1 and G.4.1 to alter sail cons

Both interpretations 2003-IOM-5 and 2011-IOM-3 said that single panel sails are permitted. All the verbiage in the 2012 AGM proposal about single panels, faulty interpretations, 'effective' class rules, and breaking Class Regulations is irrelevant. It is sad to see how much sand the proposal has kic...

I think it would be better if everyone put a stripe just under the last digit of the sail number in all sails. Re: The new ISAF RRS 2013-2016 are out

as per E3.8 the hail SHOULD be "Recall 4. Recall 141." x2 - pretty clear and unambiguous. If we're going strictly by RRS An interesting view I hadn't thought of! I confess that I have previously understood "the race committee shall promptly hail ‘Recall (sail numbers)’" to mean that the hail "Recal...

The poor quality of the technical resolutions put to the vote recently had me scratching my head. Re: The new ISAF RRS 2013-2016 are out

Good to start a discussion on the new rules. I'm particularly interested in the Appendix E rules. One thing I've noticed is that E3.8(a) deletes 30.2, the scoring penalty for an OCS boat. Can't for the life of me see why, I've run more than one event using 30.2 very successfully, much better than go...

Hi Robert

The solution to the batten pocket / batten end / sail leech problem is a great of out-of-the-box idea. An earlier IOMICA Technical Sub-Committee wrestled with this problem and was unable to see any way around it... Can you tell us how the current solution came about?

As ever, there are two issues. One is the interpretation, and whether the Class Rules as they stand currently permit such kicking strap or vang arrangements. The second, which I guess will inevitably attract equally heated debate, is whether the Class would want to change the Class Rules so as to pe...
