Re: New Nylet Spirit is here! Progress at last!
some vinyl tape along the gunwales will "clean up" the look of the deck/hull joint, make it more waterproof, help minimize collision damage, and be lighter and easier than strips of wood.

I can attest to the utility of building up your second hull (don't ask for the details please) - faster, lighter, easier, and straighter than the first by miles! Put the first one on the mantle and race #2.

I agree - probably not relevant at all - I imagine that that copyright statement was simply updated rather than actually negotiated with ISAF.

Re: IOM Class Rules and MFs - 2012 Edition
I can check with ISAF, but am pretty sure they would object inasmuch as their logo on our published IOMICA Class Rules make it seem as though IOMICA is an ISAF affiliate member. Although I appreciate your logic, I'm sure that I'm not the only person who missed the inference that the ISAF logo beneat...

Re: IOM Class Rules and MFs - 2012 Edition
Hi Robert
Thanks for publishing the update - just one minor typographical error on the first page: while IOMICA is a member of IRSA, IOMICA is not an Affiliate Member of ISAF. The IRSA cube logo is appropriate, the ISAF logo is not. Thanks

Re: Data transmission from the boat
Some of the 2.4 GHz radios used dual receiver technology, so they were allowed as part of that package. The issue of battery monitoring is of some importance: many of the current IOM designs have the battery below a sealed sticky patch without an exposed on/off switch for overall water resistance. R...

Re: New Nylet Spirit is here! Progress at last!
Dave Don't despair - all of us have had build failures (perhaps not quite so public however!). Also, don't let the tone of some of the posters turn you off to IOM's - as with most web boards there are a vocal minority that tend to set the tone of class by proxy but rest assured that the remaining 99...

Re: New Nylet Spirit is here! Progress at last!
Don't be afraid of modern technology - the laser will accomplish in seconds what scraps of wood of various sizes may do in minutes to hours. I take a large level and place it on my building bench then shim it to be perfectly flat. Put the hull (deck side down) with its chainplates resting on the upp...

Re: New Nylet Spirit is here! Progress at last!
Actually, aligning the foils is pretty easy if you have a laser level (the kind that builders use to project lines on walls etc). Put the boat deck down in the building stand and level the chainplates, then use the vertical laser line to align both foils at perfect right angles to the chainplates (a...

Re: Moulded sails -- future rule change?
Let the incredulity begin - I also agree with LG! I feel that the notion of allowing molded sails will adversely affect the class, either by driving costs higher or worse still, have someone produce a "perfect" sail that renders all others to the dustbin, similar to what the Scapels did to all the o...

Re: Single Panel Molded Sails
Alfonso I think you misunderstood my post: I believe that we should not rule on construction techniques, only on the finished product. This notion fosters ingenuity and creativity while keeping the physical attributes of the class intact. Also, rules that leave techniques of construction open are ea...

Re: Single Panel Molded Sails
Xabier - the second interpretation was at the WC's during measurement. Don't think it was officially published. Alfonso - I agree with Marko that our "equipment" rules need to be enforceable, meaning testable. If we add verbiage regarding the actual construction techniques of manufacturing sails int...

Re: Single Panel Molded Sails
Inasmuch as the same person has interpreted the rule twice in recent years in completely opposite ways (first moulded sails are not allowed, then later on, they're OK), the rule needs to be re-written to provide clarity rather than another interpretation of a vague rule. The important question is: s...

Re: Single Panel Molded Sails
When we consider amending the CR's to specifically include moulded single panel sails we should also address what in that process constitutes a "ply". As I understand it, many 3DL type sails have a flexible, adhesive laden layer that actually is formed to the mould upon which reinforcing thread and ...

Re: Single Panel Molded Sails
Just when I was thinking this was all going to go away and we could go sailing! Re: Single Panel Molded Sails
I guess another way of looking at this is perhaps for the next WC's a bunch of us should put together boats that skirt the edge of legality, hoping that VC Tech finds ruling against all of us would be too much hassle! Strength in numbers. On a more serious note, shouldn't this question of legality (...

Re: Single Panel Molded Sails
So, if the "out of date" interpretation upheld the notion that the sails are illegal according to their reading of the class rules, what is the problem? Sounds like they are illegal regardless of which documentation you read. Now, what to do about it is another question? Perhaps the IOMICA VC Techni...

Re: Single Panel Molded Sails
Alphonso
It actually is important now - if illegal sails were used in the WC's, a lot of folks will have their final positions changed as those who used illegal sails should be DSQ which will change the allocation of places for the next WC regatta

might consider a second pair of diagonal struts from the bottom of the keel trunk to the after end of the chainplate block to prevent any twisting should you elect to place your shroud attachment point aft of the existing diagonal strut

Re: What batteries are people using?
I agree with Barry - my Tx packs come off fully charged at 12+ volts and by the end of a 2 day regatta are usually around 9.8 volts. You do have to take care not to let them discharge below their critical value or they're dead and cannot be charged.

Re: What batteries are people using?
Folks using RMG winches are in luck inasmuch as they have an internal voltage regulator that outputs 5 volts, pretty much regardless of the input voltage (4.8 to 7.2 volts). As long as you run power to the winch and allow it's output to power the Rx and the rudder servo, you're OK. I've been running...
