Lester, the rule actually says that thr corrector weights 'shall be fixed in/on the hull ' Whatever the RRS or ERS say and however those affect the configuration of the boat while competing at any level the rule is worded in an absolute and mandatory way and is not qualified. The effect of this is t...

Antonio, interesting that you too are one of the Tony Watts generation, the father of modern measuring and methods. Have you still got your IRYU Measurers Manual? Of course the Measurer is a member of the Race Team at least and being responsible for the organisation and execution of the measuement i...

Antonio, having been the Official Measurer at World and European Championships many times let me explain to you how this works. The class will appoint or approve a person to be the Official Measurer, to organise and oversee the measurement of the boats competing and to inform the participating helpe...

Jan, of course the equipment must comply with the class rule as it is written, it cannot be otherwise. But my comment about the way class rules are generated went way further back than the point at which the ERS and SCR get involved. I am talking about the point where the class appoints a group to c...

You know, I find it sad that after all the years that I have been a measurer, very little has changed in the way that rules are generated. I can best liken it to a collection of small communities facing the same problems and trying to find THE solution. Of course each solution will be unique but how...

And seeing that the matter of the wall thickness tolerance has come up, given that measurement is required to be done using non-destructive methods only, how does Ordinary Joe measure this as required by the rule, at any point along its length. No-one has come up with a valid and operable answer to ...

With regard to the matter of the 10mm mast, which Robert thinks should actually be 9.6, None of the classes that I measure for have any such tolerance. Here Robert is approaching this question as an engineer, where working tolerances are the norm. However this is not an engineering matter. The rules...

A very interesting correspondence. As a 'member' of the RSD Technical Committee, though like Robert, now out of term of office, I have never seen any of these matters raised in committee. So just to clarify things, none of this has been through the RSD Technical Committee for discussion but seems to...

Surely your boat preparation for a major event would include check weighing the boat on accurate scales and adjusting it at that point. I know from experience the top sailors leave nothing to chance in preparing for an event and will turn up with the boat fully sorted and all the paperwork. Conseque...

Spot on! This is a fundamental change to our sport and which needs absolute clarity at this point. Of course ISAF will want to put a blue sticker on the boat and charge us for the privelege but only once. It's usually a percentage of the cost of a new boat and we need to know what the other classes ...

well I kept out of this discussion for a while to see what came up. Very interesting too. You have Roy L reading the rule as it stands, you have Lester, a British National Judge insisting that the rules only apply when the boat is racing and you have me coming to measure a boat with the rule book in...

Let me put my measurer's hat on for a moment. The longer you go on measuring and the more classes you cover, the more bits of equipment and jigs you will make and acquire to make the job more consistent. I used to joke that eventually I would need a small truck to carry it all around. Remember also ...

The ideal that any class should look for, is a rule that is so simple and clear that anyone can pick it up and use it correctly. Like most ideals this is unreachable and largely because the rules evolve in response to developments and also peoples fear of changes and the effect thay have on the exis...

Ah, but Lester the whole point is that you are not a measurer so you are expressing only a layman's opinion. Measurers dont place their own interpretation on the rules, they enforce the rules as they exist. You seem to think that you know better than everyone else what the rules mean when you quite ...

Lester, if the class organisation decides that they want correctors, batteries or any other thing checked at a major meeting then what better place to do it. That is the norm in any class I do assure you. I find it hard to read a clearer instruction than is set out in C.4.3 " Corrector weight(s) to ...

If the owner takes the responsibility for the compliance of the boat to all the rules, it is my opinion that the measurer is the person who should be looking at all these points as part of the fundamental ...

Yes Lester, the Class Rules do indeed say that but I disgree with your statement that only when racing must the boat be in compliance. That would mean that the certificate, as a guarantee that the boat was 'legal' would be worthless 99% of the time. How about when the boat was sold? What guarantee i...

Do what Graham Bantock does, wrap the lead in a bit of deck patch cloth and stick it in place with a bit of silicone. That way you can get at the lead by cutting away the cloth if you want to reduce or add to it and if you want to get it out then release it from the deck patch and then you can clean...

Gilbert, I think it was in the original class rules and remains there. Rules evolve becuse people challenge the things they allow or forbid. The way to go is, if you feel strongly enough, to make a submission for a rule change and let the democratic processes of the class decide whether it is what t...

In the big boat classes I measure, corrector weights are required to be fastened to the boat. Various rules specify the means - maybe bonding or bolting or screwing - but it is quite clear that they are intended to be fixed and immovable. Most rules even specify where they have to be fixed. We have ...

Lester's suggestion is just a distraction. The owner is resposible for the compliance of his boat with the class rules. Not now and again and not just while its actually afloat. He or she is responsible for seeing that the boat is in compliance with the rules. The rules in question are quite clear o...

Two points to bear in mind here. These are closed class rules so unless something is specifically permitted, it is not allowed and rule F.4.2 does not include 'lightening holes'. Secondly you mention covering these holes with adhesive film and that is not an allowed material under F.4.1. Now you can...

I have been reviewing your various comments in this series. (1) you accuse me of 'name calling'. Where did I do that? (2) what do you class as 'finger wagging'? (3) re your comments about the imperfections in the rules you make much of having an opinion. Indeed so. It is, as with the Law of the Land...
