I wanted to weigh in on the discussion. My sincerest thanks to all those who have served to make the IOM class what it is today. The class has come a long way and the time during Greg's chairmanship has gone quite quickly. I agree with Brad Gibson and many others in the sentiment related to managing...

Some interesting discussions. It doesn't seem like anyone has contacted Paul Beard regarding these questions. If you want real answers you might consider doing so. Paul's website is www.modelavionics.com Regarding todays equipment, you mean to tell me that there's no detectable RF coming from the ra...

Salt Water for Lipo's
If you have a dmaged lithium polymer pack the procedure to render them inert is to place them in salt water and open the case. The salt water will prevent the reaction from occuring. Most likely you won't have a problem. But Lipo's aren't to be taken lightly. Then can and have cuased very serious in...

As you might be aware, the World Council was asked to vote on how it wished to proceed with the necessary rule change on moveable ballast. By resolution WC-2004-03, the World Council resolved that the mechanism by which IOMICA shall seek a change to the IOM Class Rules on moveable ballast would be ...

In the proposed change do the rules allow a battery to be weight managed in such a way as a skipper could use multiple batteries and ballast them to achieve like weights? Hi Rob What is the lump of lead you might attach to your battery? A corrector weight? (Might be worth keeping in mind that this ...

Why are we tip toeing around this? Lester and Charles have admitted there is an issue. They allude to something going on but also seem comfortable that the issue is being "informally" addressed. Both of these individuals are charged with participating in the day to day operation of the class. The CR...

To the best of my knowledge, we have not received any RFIs from non-members (and if we did, I'm pretty sure they would have received the exact same treatment). Marko If anyone out there has received this kind of response from the ICA and remains outside the ICA "club", I'm very interested in assist...

No, Marko it was indeed submitted to whom I thought was the steward of the IOM class. This was Lester's Response (via e-mail) We are happy to discuss it informally, as you see, but if you'd like a formal interpretation, I'm not entirely sure of the way forward for you, since you are not a recognised...

Last weekend there was an IOM regatta in California (Challenge Cup with 28 competitors). From some chatter I heard (scuttlebutt), there's an interesting request for interpretation underway surrounding the jib pivot / swivel text in the class rules. Can you or VC Tech speak to it? I'm not sure what I...

I figured there would be some response to Roy's question. Are we all happy with the direction and path? Are we unhappy with some things but find most to be palatable? Why not tell the ICAexec "good job" if that's what you feel? The ICA is to benefit the skipper. We all need to participate in the pro...

I'm interested to know if the World Council has voted on this policy. If not, why not? It is also my opinion, and experience, that holders of offices submit themselves to additional scrutiny. It seems that the further defining of the acceptable use policy is a reaction to a recent event. I feel it's...

NCA Size and Allocation of Places
I believe the number of places allocated a country is based upon it's size. Nowhere have I seen how many skippers are represented by the NCA's who have joined the IOMICA. Can this also be addressed?

I provided my comments to Lester, I take it you've not seen them and will forward them directly to you. Fundamentally, restricting the sailmaker's certification to only their NCA is restrictive and anti-competitive. For instance, a sailmaker in Mexico must wait for the NCA for Mexico to exist and su...

Re: Hull Corrector Weights
Good catch, Lester! I would not have thought to look in appendix E for this. Now, does this mean the battery must go back in exactly the same place, and be exactly the same weight? I would say yes the battery of the same weight should be used throughout the regatta placed in the same spot from begi...

Yes, I understand it to be OK/permitted. But, do keep you inner layering of glass fiber clear so that it can be seen that no forbidden materials are lurking hidden away inside. I've always understood that ANY inner layer of glass be unpigmented. Others have raised a very good point that the externa...

Chris, it is G.3.1(a)(2) that would worry me. G.3.1 (a) (1) The construction shall be: soft sail, single ply sail. (2) The body of the sail shall consist of the same ply throughout and of not more than four parts joined by seams. I'm not sure (unofficially, of course!) that a "white panel" and a "b...

Race Course Design
From a North American perspective, most of our racing has used a Windward / Leeward course with a windward offset mark and a leeward gate. This type of course was used at the Vancouver Worlds as well. The objective of the offset and leeward gate is to reduce fouls and congestion during a race. The c...

The other issue is that the 2001 and 1999 WC's were in Croatia and Malta. So Europe has had their opportunity to have nearby WC's. Most importantly to me is that the regatta be of high quality and caliber. The Vancouver Worlds was such a splendid event. Don Martin and the others at RVYC really set a...
