Re: 2015 AGM - Topic: Ratify Emergency Class Rule
After some introspection: One might assume that since the rule specifies that "where the mast kicking strap fitting and/or gooseneck: ...are not of circular cross section...." that the 20 mm dimension begins where the fitting is no longer of circular cross section eg. the flat plate portion of the f...

Re: 2015 AGM - Topic: Ratify Emergency Class Rule
now that this rule change has been voted in, we need to clarify it: 1) all gooseneck fittings obviously rotate about a plane parallel to the mast, but some also have rotational adjustment perpendicular to the plane of the mast to allow variable vang tension between close hauled & downwind boom posit...

Re: 2015 AGM - Topic: Alternate Scoring System
I believe this to be premature. Before administratively mandating a major change in how regattas are run and scored, the alternative method needs to be tried by the general IOM community and a consensus formed as to whether it improves on the tried-and-true HMS. Outside of the originators of this "H...

I also believe this should be voted against. By virtue of the fact that they are qualified to sit on a properly composed International Jury per Appendix N requires a certain level of competence in managing the duties of a Jury: "N 1.1 An international jury shall be composed of experienced sailors wi...

Re: Redress...
I'm certainly not complaining! I am struck by the fundamental un-fairness of having someone clobber you then having to non-competitively limp around the course and not withdraw (potentially affecting other boats as well as your own) in order to ask for redress. IMHO, we should consider addressing th...

The only problem we've had with HMS is that it stops after 41 races, but to be honest, we were ready to stop too!

On the notion that the disablement actually made the score worse and the business of retiring: If a skipper, having been properly fouled, becomes free and is able to sail the course but at a disadvantage eg: disabled for a long period of time or something became maladjusted on his boat, it appears t...

Re: Redress...
Hi Gordon We sort of went through this while working on the SI's for the WC regatta, but it might help to let others into the fray: By removing the words "as a result, retiring" from the redress rule we, IMHO, have made it possible to use this rule as a racing tactic eg: A boat becomes disabled for ...

Re: IRSD
IMHO, 3 options exist: 1) Re-sign the affiliation agreement with IRSA and live with whatever new items they draft that impacts our class. Not sure this is smart, based on history. 2) Sever our ties with IRSA and affiliate directly with ISAF - this will not work inasmuch as ISAF has delegated all thi...

Re: Redress...
All requests for redress are addressed to the Protest Committee IMHO, the skipper needs to decide if he can continue to compete - sure you can limp around the course without a back stay or with a tear in your sail, but functionally, your race is over. If you're already in last place, why not continu...

Re: Redress...
Step back and think about the basic idea of the rule: if you're racing along and minding your own business then someone clobbers you and your race just went down the drain through no fault of your own, and the bloke that hit you broke a rule in doing so, you should be entitled to redress. Choosing t...

why not simply add the phrase "to sail competitively" to the definition of "Disabled"? Re: Redress...
Tough to define "entanglement" without some sort of elapsed time criteria after which "entangled" becomes "disabled" Inasmuch as retirement from the heat is required to request redress allows skippers to decide how serious the entanglement was and whether or not they would be better off continuing i...

Re: 2013 AGM Schedule
I stand corrected.
Perhaps it is a good idea to pass legislation to make it more difficult to sail in IOMICA regattas!
I officially change my mind - more power to this proposal!

Re: 2013 AGM Schedule
I wonder, given the cancellation of one WC and a dismal attendance at the most recent WC, if we should perhaps be more concerned in increasing entries rather than limiting them.

Re: Changes to Class Rule G.3.1 and G.4.1 to alter sail cons
Barry - I'm confused about how you can be confused about what is confusing (say that 10 times fast!). I believe that many members thought that, by your own analysis; "the proposed wording was to explicitly make single panel sails legal " implying that if they voted against the proposal, single panel...

Changes to Class Rule G.3.1 and G.4.1 to alter sail const
There seems to be confusion and/or disagreement about what the vote on Proposal 6.6 - "Changes to Class Rule G.3.1 and G.4.1 to alter sail construction" actually accomplished. Some voters were under the impression that voting against this proposal was a vote against single panel sails Some voters we...

I've used both: 0.025 SS wire - theoretically less windage because it's smooth (but probably not a detectable amount) - terminal connections more difficult - tough to control once off the boat (unless the wire is straight to begin with) - IMHO, looks better Braided cable - terminal connections easy ...

Re: Data transmission from the boat

The EXEC cannot change rules without a vote of the general membership and approval by IRSA, but they can interpret the existing rules as in this case. Not complaining, just clarifying. Interpreting the existing rules to allow use of battery tel...

fins that can be detached from their bulbs are much easier to paint, fill, sand, repair, & polish if that's a concern - you check every other screw on the boat before going sailing - just add the keel/bulb nut to the list (or cross pin them together)
