Re: How important is weight?

the same excess weight that may glide you through tacks will also slow your acceleration and mobility. Most IOM's are wearing 10s of grams of corrector weights in the bilge - to be 100 gms overweight is quite a bit. You may not be able to notice a performance degrade, but it's there.

Re: Dry or Waterless Measuring

It might be interesting to bring the dry measurement system to the WC's and dual measure all the boats - of course the dry measurement system would have no bearing on the boats' legality, but it would allow for a direct comparison of the two methods over a wide range of hull forms.

Re: Asking for Interpretation - rigging

Hi Robert Declaring financial ties is always good - keeps everything above board. Being part of a committee making decisions that may affect the finances and/or business plans of a company you depend upon for part of your livelihood is never good - raises doubts about the decision process. In a prof...

Re: Asking for Interpretation - rigging

Robert I noticed that you sat on the joint committee on this technical interpretation. Inasmuch as you are commercially associated (as a boat builder) with GB (who originated the request), don't you think it's a conflict of interest to be part of the process? I recall this issue arose during the las...

Re: Typical weight of a No 1 rig?

Hi Dave Lasers work great and are perfectly sized to fit under the Christmas tree - print out this post and leave it somewhere for your spouse/kids/Santa to see. Suggest that they get one that shoots both a horizontal and vertical line at the same time. Auto-leveling is a nice bonus feature. You can...

If you can borrow a laser level (the kind that project a perfectly straight red line onto the walls & ceiling) your alignment task will be made considerably easier.

Re: New Country Joining IOMICA

The process of applying for IOMICA membership is spelled out in our governing documents (check the HOMEPAGE for them) It does not happen overnight - when Malta joined a few years back, the process took several months at least. There is no need for secrecy in the application process and I am disappoi...

Re: The Cost of Operating a Major Event

I see no compelling reason that IOMICA should not contribute financially to its own World Championship irrespective of whether or not the organizers are being paid for their services. With the high cost of putting together these affairs, one way of decreasing the cost and risk is to include IOMICA a...

Re: The Cost of Operating a Major Event

Why can't "we" allow the organizers to make profit? Certainly they are doing a service that benefits the class and the competitors. Hoteliers and food service folks are making profit. The panel of judges are being paid, transported, housed, and fed. Small wonder that IOMICA cannot get the organizers...

Re: How many Actually Voted - 2010 AGM

as one of the authors of the complicated motions, I should comment: The "big" motions (one owner = one vote, eliminate the "electoral college" style of vote counting, and eliminating 2 classes of voting owners) certainly suffered by attempting to be too encyclopedic and specific. One option is to si...

Re: winch or arm servo?

If you are racing, initial cost is not the only consideration: Is an inexpensive servo worth the hassle of traveling to a regatta then not sailing due to servo failure? Is an arm winch setup worth the hassle of traveling to a regatta then not sailing due to the arm getting tangled up or the servo bu...

Re: IOMICA Fees

Having tried and failed to get final budget numbers from FRA and BAR during my tenure as VCE, I think this is a brilliant idea! Refund all or part of the IOMICA fee if the proper "after action" reports (including the final budget and expense accounts) are filed in a timely manner. Might actually work!

Re: 2010 AGM Agenda and Notice of Meeting

Then why not let the general membership know about it far enough in advance of the AGM to go through the process of getting a nomination? Of course he is running un-opposed - there was never public notification requesting nominations ...

Re: Hull Construction

The interpretation of the GRP only rule has been pretty strict. Texalium was banned because it's not (just) fiberglass despite strong support to the contrary. That probably sets a precedent to continue to ban anything other than good old fashion fiberglass for hull construction, despite the eloquenc...
