Re: 2013 World Championships
Yes, I really have always believed that more information available to more people is the best course. Without getting into the details of what happened in 2008, I was of the opinion then as I am now, that as much information as possible should be shared with the class membership. In hindsight, in fa...

Re: 2013 World Championships
I always thought that keeping everyone informed and soliciting feedback from members on important decisions was part of the role of an organization's leadership. Maybe it is a little messy and time consuming and sometimes people might even disagree with you or tell you things that you don't want to ...

Re: 2013 World Championships
If informed input from the class members is desired, it would seem valuable to make the different 2013 bids available for everyone to see and comment on before a decision is made rather than after...

Re: Moulded sails -- future rule change?
"Do not worry NS [North Sails] wont start making model sails not enough money for them." Actually, not true. I'm friends with Tom Whidden president of North Sails and we have talked about 3DL for models. If someone places an order, they will make the sails. Their very, very large and expensive machi...

Re: Moulded sails -- future rule change?
I never thought this day would come, but I am in virtually complete agreement with Lester Gilbert on this issue. Numerous "big" boat classes have prohibited the use of molded sails for exactly the reasons Lester sets forth. To get a molded sail right takes considerable expertise and specialized equi...

Re: Single Panel Molded Sails
Except a little over two years ago our current class Technical Vice Chairman interpreted the exact same supposedly clear language in exactly the opposite manner and said that under those rules molded sails using heat or force were illegal. I also recall a few posts back that the current IOMICA Execu...

Re: Single Panel Molded Sails

Also, please explain how as stated above the class is ...

Re: Single Panel Molded Sails
Can't speak for anyone else, but I for one have stopped posting on this topic, because it is clear how this is all going to end. The person who alone created this issue--Robert Grubisa--who ruled first in 2003 that sails molded by heat or force were not class legal and then later in 2011 that his in...

Re: Single Panel Molded Sails
I think a number of different questions are being mashed together here First question is what should be the policy of the IOM Class regarding "3DL type" sails made over a mold? I think there are good arguments on both sides of the question. I think the issue should be aired out in public and then th...

Marko: If by "back channels" you mean that I heard from a few competitors at the event that the Croatian team was using one piece "3DL" type sails and to check them out in pictures on the World's website, then "yes" I heard through back channels. If you mean I was told about the problem with measure...

Re: Single Panel Molded Sails
Thinking a little about how to go forward, one thing would seem to be very clear---the last thing IOMICA needs is another "technical interpretation" on the legality of molded sails. This is an issue that the class should vote on. Let the issue be aired out both positive and negative and then hold a ...

Re: Single Panel Molded Sails
I actually think there are two important issues going on here--First, does the IOM class want to permit single panel molded sails? Questions like these I have always believed should be decided on by a vote of the class and not by a technical "interpretation". Second, and equally important is what ha...

Re: Single Panel Molded Sails
John: I think you have it right. The past (and current) VC Technical ruled that these sails aren't legal. Even if the prior interpretation "expires" (which I'm not sure is correct), I think at the very least the prior interpretation has to be relied upon unless and until a new ruling says differentl...

Re: Single Panel Molded Sails
Actually, what I am remembering is an early IOM Class rule interpretation (Number 5 from I think 2003) that said that sails shaped by heat or force were not class legal.
Was curious why this didn't apply. Also was wondering if the one piece sails worked and if they were fast....

Single Panel Molded Sails
In looking at some of the pictures from the recent IOM World Championship, I noticed that a few boats were sailing with jibs that appeared to be a molded single panel of mylar. The sails looked interesting. Anyone know the back story? And, also, I thought I remembered an interpretation where this wa...

IOMICA Website--What Happened?

Re: How important is weight?
Years ago, when I was first learning to shoot, my instructor told me that it was more important for a beginner rather than an expert to have the best equipment possible. He said it was hard enough to learn to shoot right; to learn with a gun with faulty sights was almost impossible. Weight is import...

Re: Dry or Waterless Measuring
In thinking more about this issue, I believe the question of validity of a dry measurement system is two fold--first does a dry measurement system "accept" existing boats that measure in a tank? And second, what boats would a dry measurement system "permit" that a tank would not? Each would appear t...

Re: Dry or Waterless Measuring
The effort and thought put into this project is appreciated. The problem that I believe is inherent in this and all other dry measurement systems that I have seen proposed to date is that it allows designers to fundamentally change the nature of IOM hulls. In the proposal it is acknowledged that hul...

Re: Asking for Interpretation - rigging

My reading of the governing documen...

Re: Asking for Interpretation - rigging
The issue here is not whether a rules interpretation is right or wrong. It is who should be allowed to decide the question. In just a quick check of various ISAF rules is it very clear that it is required that the integrity of all officials must be beyond reproach (see for example the ISAF rules on ...

Weeds
Recently, I have been wondering what should be the proper response (both as a competitor and as the race committee) to the presence of weeds during the course of a race. Two situations come to mind--first, what to do when in a series of heats different competitors acquire weeds. Second, what to do a...

Re: The Cost of Operating a Major Event
Doing some rough math, it look like the cost of a continental championship (not including the value of sponsorships or donations) is roughly $50,000 US of which entry fees make up approximately half. All in all, it seems to me that the class has to find a way to cut these costs significantly if we w...

Re: How many Actually Voted - 2010 AGM
This depressingly low turnout clearly demonstrates that contrary to what has been claimed by some, the current electoral college system doesn't protect smaller countries--it gives undue power to big countries and a few voters. I can't see how the current system can be defended. If you are interested...
