Plans for a wooden IOM

Post by Jeremy Price » 07 Sep 2023, 09:43

Hi all, does anyone know of any other plans apart from those below suitable for building an IOM in wooden planks, where the plans are not too out of date. Really looking for laser cut options or at least a file in pdf format that I can turn into laser cut files myself.

All I know of is the Following:
• Vickers V8 (I have built this - great files)
• Ellipsis pdf and other files available
• Equinox pdf and other files available (I have built this - great files)
• Alternative (but paper only plans which are a pain)
• Corbie 5 (paper plans only
or have to pay someone in UK for laser cut stations - I'm in Australia)

I understand how much work goes into the development, but was hoping for more recent plans than EG: the V8.....
regards Jeremy

Have you considered the Corbie 6 from Mirage Radio Yachts?
I have since purchased a CNC/Laser machine and would scan the plans to PDF and use Vectric Cut2D to convert them to Gcode.
The build instructions are very comprehensive and include detailed rig setup measurements.

Fantastic build Art. I had considered it, then discarded, but after seeing your build I might give it a go. Thanks very much for sharing the build log. Fabulous log and reference.
My V8 is referenced here,

Would it be OK to share that log in this reference article? Let me know if not.
regards Jeremy

Hi Jeremy,

Feel free to add my Google Photo links to your web site.
Here are 2 other IOM builds I have recorded in Google Photos (note I have added comments to some of the photos).

My first build - Ellipsis...
https://photos.app.goo.gl/GMHJELrPn1TDXfeTA
This one ended up 160g overweight and had a pinhole leak, so I shelved it after the first sail.
Another IOM sailor who restored a full sized cold-molded sailboat wanted to buy it and rebuild it.
Here is my weight reduction rebuild log, removing the 1.5mm aft deck and keel/finbox. He finished the build after that and was able to get it down to 4000g. https://photos.app.goo.gl/zxstsDgaajf8LYk37

Here is my custom Equinox build for the same owner of the Ellipsis...
This was a collaboration where I built the hull, finbox, bulkhead and dry fitted the decks.
It was then finished by the new owner.

This is the first build I did with my newly acquired CNC/Laser cutter/engraver.
I imported the PDF of the frames into my CAM program and added 'tumblehome' to the bow frames to reduce windage and improve airflow to the jib.

We have quite a few woodies here in the Pacific Northwest.
Here is a 7 panel hard chine design by Martin Herbert, designer, builder and sailor of the Dart series of woodies.

(I called 'Flattie' because the bottom is a flat panel).
There are also some photos of Martin's Dart 6 on our website here:

Beautiful Work Art. Jealous of all the woodies sailing over there.
cheers Jeremy
