Vang on the Viss was and is legal.
Now there is a discussion about whether someone can be made bigger or if we need to limit it.
The Porter one was not a vang, it was and still is a vang fitting. It was not legal at the start and later became legal with a size limit.

Cool design
Should be OK now, now that multiple attachment points are allowed.

Re: The size of a vang/kicking strap ... discussion
Hi All Correct me if I’m wrong, but 10 years ago the standard gooseneck fitting was roughly 3×3 mm × 2 screws (one at top, one at bottom), which gives about 20 mm² total. Later, the allowed size was 2000 mm². If we apply the same ratio today, a vang starting at 500 mm² would scale up to 50,000 mm², ...

Re: The size of a vang/kicking strap ... discussion
Hi All
Actually, the vang black plastic body shown in my previous post has a surface area of about 730 sq mm. When you add the rotating gooseneck, vang–boom fitting and the main boom fitting, the total exposed area comes to roughly 3000 sq mm.

Re: The size of a vang/kicking strap ... discussion
Dear All Projected Area – Clarification Question I have the same as Brad clarification question regarding projected surface area. When the Mainsail Boom Vang fitting (F.4.3(a)(3)) overlaps with the boom—as shown in the attached picture—should that overlapping area also be included in the projected s...

Re: The size of a vang/kicking strap ... discussion
Hi All Regarding production, in my case, it is easier to manufacture a VISS vang than a standard wire with a threaded adjuster. For the VISS vang, you need 2D laser cutting ( or it all can even be cut by hand ), plus a small amount of epoxy and carbon fiber. For the wire-and-threaded-adjuster soluti...

Re: The size of a vang/kicking strap ... discussion
Zvonko's suggestion of a 20mm x 200mm vang (ring gauge size and total length) would certainly be easy to understand and stop surface area growth. I would suggest that a 200mm length is around 50mm too much - but negotiation on size can come after agreement on the principle. Just for info, this is f...

Re: The size of a vang/kicking strap ... discussion
Dear The surface area of the Viss Vang is 1739 sq mm, and can be seen at the following link: https://www.iomclass.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2111 This is a comparison with a vang that has been on the market for a long time, so I assume that it does not violate Rule F.2.3, and that our solution i...

Re: Kicking strap 2025 AMG
Hi Tony, At the moment there is no limit in either length or height. With the proposals, we’ll at least get a height limit. If you also want a length limit (which I personally think is unnecessary), you’re welcome to make a proposal for the next AGM. I don’t understand the logic — better to have no ...

Re: Kicking strap 2025 AMG
Hi Tony, No problem at all — I know you won’t be voting for the CRO proposal, and that’s perfectly fine. We’ll just have to wait and see what others decide. You’re a bit mistaken about the height of my rigs, though. They’re actually the same, or even slightly higher, than on most of the newer boats ...

Re: Light Air Setup....
Hi
I would open the jib sheet about 5 mm more and increase the jib foot depth to around 35 mm. I’d also make the mainsail a bit fuller in the upper part — as much as possible to still look well-shaped and can tack properly in light winds.

Re: Kicking strap 2025 AMG
Hi Tony, Thank you for sharing your perspective — but some of your statements deserve a bit of deconstruction, as they leave out key facts. First, you open by saying this situation “has become a complete mess,” yet you overlook a crucial point: this confusion was not created by IOMICA, but by IRSA. ...

So just to clarify — you’re okay with this (see picture): Untitled.jpg where the well is partially closed off by a plate (shown as solid) attached to and flush with the surrounding deck. Re: Kicking strap 2025 AMG
Hi Olivier In 2024 there was no CRO NC submission on this subject, IOM ICA Exec voted following IOM Class Rule amendment which is valid from 12 February 2024: F.2.4 (e) Kicking strap shall be capable of passing through a 20 mm ring gauge. What was later voted for at the AGM by approx. 77% of IOMica ...

Regarding the CRO Resolution: CROsubmission_2025_IOM_ICA_AGM.docx.pdf The VISS kicking strap is capable of passing through a 20 mm ring gauge, confirming that it remains within the dimensional limits defined by the CRO Resolution. Its slightly curved shape was intentionally designed to follow the co...

SHRS scoring system
Dear Friends At World Championship in Pierrelatte, some of you had questions about SHRS scoring system while we were waiting for the protests, so my idea is to put all the answers and future questions here. 1. Do all competitors sails to the end of the championship? Yes, at 50% - 60% of the champion...
