One day regatta in Holland - february 4 2007
I note that Dutch National Authority is hosting a one-day regatta on February 4th near Gouda. There is a posting on the German RC Network discussion forum here...

Successful initiatives to encourage entry to the class via a budget route can be taken at club level. All that is needed is to pick a design that is in the public domain, or obtain one from a designer, build some club molds, and provide club support to prospective owners via, say, building workshops...

Alan It was a reference to Mr Smales' multiple successes over the years. One of my earliest sailing memories as a youngster was watching some Flying Dutchmans training off Takapuna. I was told that one of the boats was current national champ, and was training for the Olympics. It was being sailed by...

One of the unfortunate features of communicating by internet forum or email is that we do not have the benefit of interpreting intonation and the various non-verbal communications that are so important to us in face to face conversation. As a result, there is always the risk that a message, reduced ...

Ray I suggest it would be very unwise to make plans based on the possibility of multiple fins, moveable lead etc. The issue Lester is highlighting is that by voting down the package of rule changes, the effect has been to (unwittingly) void any further cover of the temporary measures in place prior ...

I think I see where Arvin is coming from. As a former expatriate resident in a South East Asian country, I was not eligible to represent that country in the class I sailed (we're talking dinghies, not RC boats). Irrespective of any international rules re eligibility - this country had its own rules....

Your comments are well reasoned and both are writing with the benefit of your considerable expertise and experience in your respective areas. This is a healthy and level-minded discussion, and can only benefit the class, and...

IOMs make front page of Sailing Anarchy
The IOM has made the "front page" of big boat online sailing magazine, Sailing Anarchy today. http://www.sailinganarchy.com/
One of Nick Lindsley's images, featuring a Cockatoo and Nick's Ares is featured about halfway down the page.
Well done Nick - great profile for the class.

Paul I'll assume your hull core material is balsa - in which case you really do need to glass the outside as it has insufficient impact resistance otherwise (IMHO). On my boat, I applied two coats of epoxy undercoat, slightly thinned, by hand. I then wet sanded these right back until there was almos...

I have an own-design double chine IOM nearing completion. I designed it after deciding to build a more conventional IOM (also to my own design) which was to be my first home-built attempt in this class. I got cold feet and decided to build a double chine version first as a low risk test of my buildi...

Just to add to Arvin's comments, but in this context (IOM specific):- Checkstays are the sidestays joining the mast a short distance above the deck. They are optional IF the boat does not use a mast ram - or "mast strut" as the rules call it (which most IOMs do use). For an example of an IOM with ch...

Graham Consider approaching your local swimming pool manager. Ask to be allowed to bring the boat along very early one morning - I'd suggest before they open. The only people there will be those training - they'll be lane swimming and totally disinterested in the twat with the model boat. You can cl...

Maybe the Class Rules section is the wrong place to continue this thread, but I too have been pondering the idea of using a space frame - either alloy or laminated light ply, to accept and spread the rig loads in a light hull. It brings to mind Ron Holland's "Imp" (and IOR 40 footer back in 1977) wh...

James Nobody seems to have addressed your question about scows yet (which I though was a pretty interesting question). I remember some Marbleheads that were scows in the early '80s. I think I've even got a photo somewhere. Without sitting down and working it out, my gut feel is that the 4kg minimum ...

The Italiko is only available via the builder/agents with the hull ready built (Sails Etc http://www.sailsetc.com), but plans are available for the Kite can be purchased at a modest cost. Do an online search or visit http://www.gbmy.com/cs...

Signatus, Welcome to the world of RC sailboats. The IOM and the US One Meter are quite different boats, and although an IOM could meet the USOM rules (with a different rig), most USOM designs are too light to meet the IOM minimum class weight of 4kg. There are other differences - best understood by ...
