Re: HULL MATERIALS....3D Printing. Croatian Motion.
Hi Robert, My impression of that picture is that the 'honeycomb' is not a honeycomb, but an hexagonal pattern surface texture, and serves little difference than the picture with strips. From Wikipedia, (and I underlined the key piece) Honeycomb structures are natural or man-made structures that have...

Re: HULL MATERIALS....3D Printing. Croatian Motion.
HI Robert,
Thanks for the reference to the rule change, however, it is still not an issue, as gelcoat is a type of resin (permitted) and resin may be coloured. The other references such as use of fillers still apply.

Hi Robert, You wrote Your proposal is not solving following items, related to the "classic" moulded boats. According to the current IOM Class Rules: a) Gel coat is not listed. Is it permitted? b) Coloured pigment is not listed. Is it permitted? c) Is a filler made of resins with some filler (micro b...

Re: HULL MATERIALS....3D Printing. Croatian Motion.
The question of allowing glass fibre as an allowed material for thermoplastics could be achieved by a motion to reword D.2.1(a)(3) which says (3) Resin, which may be coloured and/or reinforced with glass fibres, but if it were changed around such as (3) Glass fibre. which may be bonded with resin, w...

Re: HULL MATERIALS....3D Printing. Croatian Motion.
I will start by saying that I am not knowledgeable abut 3D printing, but it seems to me that there are three elements to proposing a materials rule change for the class. First, a proposal for 3D printing should only apply to class rule D2.1(8) and not attempt to change the rest of the rule D2.1 rela...

Hi Sebastian, There is an item on the IOMICA Rules section about 3d Hulls http://www.iomclass.org/iom-questions-and-answers-qa-2/ and scroll to Thermoplastics. As I understand it, there is a discussion going on about additives in the pellets that may not be in the list of approved materials. This ma...

Hello Joseph.
You raise some good questions, but this forum is not an official channel for getting the correct and binding answers.
The correct process is for the Class Secretary of IOM-France to send your question to the IOMICA Technical Committee for an interpretation.

Re: Distance of windward separation mark
Hi David, it sounds like you are mixing up gate marks with offset marks. The purpose of a downwind gate is to allow the fleet to split between two marks and especially to break a cover and split tacks with a boat that is just ahead of you. The purpose of an offset mark is to separate the boats that ...

Re: Distance of windward separation mark
Hi John, The ARYA Race Management manual recommends a minimum of 5 boat lengths for the offset at the windward end, and a minimum of 8 boat lengths for the gate marks. I would add for the windward offset, that it be far enough away that a boat has cleared the windward mark before reaching the zone o...

floatation
I just read on the UK forum of another IOM sinking - it nose-dived and probably blew off a deck patch - filled and sank immediately. the boat was 'lost'. It strikes me that it would be a good idea if we were allowed to put flotation inside the hull - eg ping pong balls, or those inflated plastic pac...

Re: Battery musings
Hi Colin, There are many answers to this question. If you use an RMG winch then you can use 2S (2 cell) LiPo or LiFe batteries, as the RMG has a built-in voltage regulator that provides 5 or 6v to the Rx and rudder servo. LiPo 2S battery voltage is too high for normal Rx and standard servos. But if ...

Re: Mast Mount
Hi Frank, A mast ram is a really important fitting on a modern IOM. Not only does the ram control bend in the lower half of the mast, it resists the forward force of the boom/gooseneck. If the boom/gooseneck is allowed to push froward, the boom rises and the twist in the upper main opens - this happ...

Hi John 2. How will discards and redress be handled for Part B of the event? Think it is up ti Judges: some can give an average on the regatta, some for the day and some just a place assigned. That would be fine, but that is NOT what the motion says. The motion says throw out HMS and use ONLY SHRS.Harry Drenth wrote:
Again I would be in favour to allow both HMS and SHRS to be used on world- and continental championships.
At least it opens the possibility to use it for one of those events.
