Re: The size of a vang/kicking strap ... discussion
If the consensus is that a plate vang should be legal (a notion with which I disagree as it does not comply with F.2.3) then rather than specify a surface area limit which can be difficult to calculate, perhaps specifying maximum vertical and horizontal dimensions could make measurement less cumbers...

Re: The size of a vang/kicking strap ... discussion
This is a complicated issue, particularly when it is being written to include the VISS vang. An surface area measurement may be difficult for event measurers to calculate at pond side, and may not be accurate if measured while attached to the rig. Do we really need to make this more complicated? Add...

Re: The size of a vang/kicking strap ... discussion
To Darrin's post - the notion of asking for an interpretation prior to putting a new design feature into the marketplace makes sense and should quell controversy but not all agree. Recall that two contentious developments in recent IOM history have been the issue of moulded sails and the issue of th...

Re: The size of a vang/kicking strap ... discussion
Thanks for being open to public discussion on this controversial topic. Opening up this forum is a step in the right direction. Social media is nice for photos etc but does not offer much in terms of keeping a substantive discussion in one place. I fear that unless we clearly define the maximum surf...

Re: 2025 AGM Meeting Minutes (final results)
Not trying to deflect, just trying to make clear to anyone reading this thread that the a vocal proponent of "double duty" vang arrangements that not only control the vertical lift of the boom but also add projected area, is also a major producer and retailer of these vang systems. This revelation m...

Re: 2025 AGM Meeting Minutes (final results)
Do you have a vested interest in producing or selling vang/kicking strap/vang fittings that would be negatively affected if the projected area issue was resolved in favor of traditional simple wire/turnbuckle devices?

Re: 2025 AGM Meeting Minutes (final results)
Thanks for your service. Re: 2025 AGM Meeting Minutes (final results)
Perhaps the new VC Tech could craft an emergency rule change/clarification that would makes vangs/kicking straps do what they were designed to do eg. control the upward movement of the boom and eliminate vangs/kicking straps from acting as unmeasured sail area. With the defeat of both the CRO and th...

Re: 2025 AGM Meeting Minutes (final results)
I was able to see the voting results because one of the National Reps sent it to me - why not make the results available to the general membership also? I have a few old rigs but the shipping would probably exceed their value inasmuch as the sails are worthless. Good source of parts & pieces.

Re: Waiting for ruling on 'Billboard'
I guess if a "deck" is undefined in the rules then any sort of unusual and unexplained protuberance could be considered legal eg. the bumps on the deck of a VISS Section F rules concern rigs: F.2.4 CONSTRUCTION (a) Fittings and/or control lines may be combined provided their function is not extended...

for a single rudder, probably most time/cost effective to simply shape one out of wood and veneer it with a single layer of light weight fiberglass

less throw = less drag
45 degrees seems a bit much and makes it tempting to use the whole throw, although it might be useful when trying to stop to avoid going over the starting line early!

If you're determined to use a switch, use a SmartSwitch from RMG - it is sealed, shows battery charge status at a glance, and is flat to eliminate line snags

Re: Radio on/ off switch...To use or not?
with LiPo or LiFe battery high capacity, it's probably easier and simpler to change batteries after a certain amount of time and simply have the boat turn on when you connect the battery and eliminate the switch since its just one more electronic thing to fail. this assumes your battery is in an eas...

What did you decide? The jib boom counterweight is not really a corrector weight (which...

Re: HULL MATERIALS....3D Printing. Croatian Motion.
It appears as though this discussion concerns how to allow "home builders" to use 3D technology for rapid prototyping. Since by all accounts, a 3D printed hull will be heavier for the same strength as a conventionally constructed hull, these will probably not be competitive but more as "trial horses...
