Surprisingly enough, they will let you carry on an RC transmitter. Dick Carver has carried his on every trip he has made. I have done it maybe 75% carry on, the rest as baggage or shipped FedEx previous. I did it in 2001, just 3 weeks after 911, going to New York no less! They will certainly check i...

I was also under the impression that if I, for example had a US member, with a registered boat (but not certified), travelling in Canada, and had his boat with him, who stumbled upon a local regatta and needed a Certificate, could (at my discretion) accept a measurement form from an official measure...

Yes, maybe a bit of clarification here will be enough, and maybe not need to bother the TC further. As an example put out for all... An owner with a currently certificated IOM purchases a new hull, ready for rigs. The owner submits a new Hull Measurement Form for the new hull, along with a request t...

Is it then possible to have your 1m sails in a different color apart from white? Hi Ray Sure, the panels just need to be all the "same". But, you might run into problems with the visibility of your sail number. If a measurer is in doubt, they would put your sails side by side with a "regular" rig, ...

Since the loops are not slides, then the 10%max of luff rule isn't relevant I think. What is important is the rule that says luff fittings can't be more than 10mm (G3.3). Your loops at 15mm are probably illegal - thats my COMPLETELY UNOFFICIAL opinion. Hi, Roy. That's exactly the way I saw it. If a...

That was the first thing I said to myself when you posted the pics recently (hmm, those are some mighty large draft stripes....) Simply put, yes, they would be illegal, and I would not expect them to pass through measurement. Acetone or MEK works very well for removing numbers, so long as you stay o...

James, GENERALLY (certainly not the rule), It is easier to make a narrow(er) boat go well in the heavy than it is to make a wide boat go well in the light. It's not as related to wetted surface as it is to balance changes as the hull heels. Unless you are using a computer design program, or have tim...

Two simple reasons for parrallel fins as opposed to double tapered fins on an IOM: 1) A parallel fin is simple to make. More IOM builders are home builders, not commercial. 2) Based on what designs are winning, or at least fast enough to be capable of winning, the double taper does not seem to be "b...

A coating is legal so long as it does not come off as the boat sails. This is covered in the RRS. Other class rules may prohibit certain coatings as well, but the IOM does not, so long as you satisfy the RRS.

Rob, Ralph covered it pretty well. What I see as most important with the skiff deck is lowering the rig. I think my boat is as low as anyone has at the moment (not completely sure it's "right" yet). I agree, Brad. Without the "closed rule", we probably would not be where we are now. Sometimes we'll have to deal with little things like this that look meaningless, but it keeps the class in check in the long haul. I don't think it was deliberately written to prohibit this type of restraint. I thin...

Jack, if I'm not mistaken, you are describing the procedure to make "big boat" sails. One edge straight, one edge curved. With model boats, from what I've been taught, a "block" is used. The block has a rise in it in the shape of a foil. The sail can be moved side to side to move and/or change the d...

Use a bag with very high elasticity, the correct perforation on your release film, and a breather fabric to smooth it out. Be sure to lay the glass down nicely by hand, and if you are using the correct bag, it will have to be sucked into the mold, so there won't be any creases. Fi you really want to...

The cotter pins are fittings to attach the jackline, and not subject to the constant of the mast. No problems there that I can see as far as the rules go, but your jib topper might catch on the ends of the pins if they are not laid down real smooth.
